it will be 20 years old after the 2016 season, and nothing has built up around it like they wanted it to. fans aren't going because it's a bitch to get to.

this is a good move IMO

I can't give an educated opinion on whether or not it's a good move, because I don't know shite about Atlanta or the surrounding area.

But why has nothing developed around the stadium in the past 20 years?

Doraville still seems like the best option to me.

to the north: parking lots, interstate, then downtown
to the east: houses
to the south: houses
to the west: interstate, then, you guessed it, more houses.

there's just nowhere to put anything really

That makes sense as to lack of development. Now my question is why was it put there in the first place? Did some misguided people think that the stadium by itself would overcome all these natural barriers to development?

There are now some pretty cool neighborhoods surrounding it. But most of the problem IMO is that it is bordered on 2 sides by cross country interstates.

I imagine city corruption has a lot to do with it as well.

I am not opposed to them moving, but people who talk about how much better the 75/285 disaster area will be must live very close to there.

The traffic is beyond horrible there already. Even from downtown Marietta it will take 30 minutes to get there now.

Mass transit is years away.

It will be for hardcore fans only.

Although on a Sunday afternoon it might be nice. Assuming they aren't doing weekend paving.

it was across the street from the Fulton county stadium, plus it was built for the olympic bid so I guess they just wanted it built, regardless of location.

It's a major metro area in the South. I thought this went without saying.

First, city government here is corrupt and short sighted.

Second, Olympic fever was so high, everything seemed like a good idea then.

This. Really dumb planning by ACOG.

Now now, you could have stopped at major metro area. Let's not forget Chicago and DC.

That seems like it should have been a factor in moving it somewhere else. They knew for decades that it was a difficult area to get to and that there was no real hope of redevelopment.

It seems like this isn't a bad decision now, it's just happening 20 years too late.

I imagine it was the easiest place to build a large, centrally located stadium for the Olympics.

It might have been a good decision 20 years ago. Bad decision now.

Seriously it is going to be a nightmare to get to.

Yeah, I know they needed it for that. I wonder what the track record on Olympic development is for the places that do all this major construction after the Olympics are gone?

What happened in Atlanta with everything?

Most of the venues found a use, so we did good there.
