CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying - Guatemala at USA

Posted on 11/19/08 at 9:52 am
The match is tonight at at 8pm Eastern (on ESPN Classic), and is being played at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Colorado.
The USMNT has already secured their spot as one of the six teams in the next round of CONCACAF qualifying, so expect to see some younger players get more playing time at this level. Guatemala are fighting to advance, so they should present a good challenge in this sixth game of group stage qualifying. Guatemala must defeat the US and Cuba must defeat Trinidad & Tobago in order to advance. They goal differential is already in their favor, so a T&T loss plus a Guatemala win means they move on. The US men lost the fifth game against Trinidad & Tobago 2-1, so they will be looking to step up their form and head into the hexagonal stage (group of six teams) qualifying on a positive note.
Only 6 of the 20 players on the roster tonight have played in 10 or more games for the national team, so expect to see some new blood. The full roster is as follows:
GK - Brad Guzan, Troy Perkins, Matt Pickens
D - Jonathan Bornstein, Sean Franklin, Cory Gibbs, Clarence Goodson, Drew Moor, Michael Parkhurst
M - Freddy Adu, Ricardo Clark, Sacha Kljestan, Pablo Mastroeni, John Thorrington
F - Jozy Altidore, Davy Arnaud, Conor Casey, Brian Ching, Kenny Cooper, Chris Rolfe
In other CONCACAF qualifying news, in Group 2 Mexico (10 points) plays at Honduras (9 points), and Jamaica (7 points) hosts Canada (2 points). If Jamaica wins their match and Mexico defeats Honduras, Jamaica will advance. If Mexico and Honduras draw, Jamaica must win their match by more than 6 goals to advance (because of goal differential). If Honduras defeats Mexico, Jamaica must win their match by more than 7 goals to advance (again because of goal differential). Group 3 has already been decided before today's matches, with Costa Rica (15) and El Salvador (12) advancing and Haiti (2) and Suriname (1) being eliminated.
Who's watching tonight, and what score do you have?

If Cooper doesn't play at LEAST 45 minutes Bradley should be fired/executed on the spot.

Yeah, I think they draw with Honduras and Jamaica gets left behind because of the goal differential. Even if Mexico were to lose their game, it would take a massive collapse from the Canadian team for Jamaica to win by 7.

Anybody know how Bobby Convey has been playing? Haven't seen his name in the US line up in a while?

He was hurt for awhile. I'll be shocked if we ever see him for the Nats again.
Any news on Subotic?

Seriously, does Brian Ching have compromising photos of the coaching staff or something? People want to bitch about EJ, but he has at least produced at some point in his career. Ching is not USMT material. Sorry.
Should be a good night to see how the kids play. And Pablo.

when does the next round start and which teams are likely to qualify besides us and Mexico?

Well four teams qualify from CONCACAF if I'm not mistaken. So I think it will be USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Honduras/Trinidad & Tobago

Reports out of Serbia on Saturday claimed he had decided to play for them but the USSF quickly disputed the claim. It has since been reported that he will wait till the end of the Bundesliga season to make his choice. I know there had been some talk that his dad wants him to play for Serbia but he is leaning toward the US.

The next round starts next year.. I don't remember the dates. It's a single group of six, with every team playing each other twice. The top three teams (in terms of points.. 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss, with goal differnential being the main tiebreaker) advance to the World Cup. The fourth place team plays the fifth place team from CONMEBOL (South America) in a playoff, and the winner advances to the World Cup.
Other than us and Mexico, it's probably a bit of a toss-up between Honduras, Costa Rica, and El Salvador for the other two chances. Trinidad & Tobago went in '06, but I believe that there are issues for their MNT this time around. It will really come down to which personnel does what in which matches.
It's not impossible that either Mexico or the US would fail to advance, although it's not very likely. If we can find some consistent attacking and shore up the defense a bit, we've got a shot to make a bit of noise this time around. It can't get much weaker than in '06, you'd hope.

I thought I had read recently (within the past month or two) that his request for full citizenship (or whatever the requirement he was waiting on) was taking too long to get processed, and that he didn't want to have to wait 2 more years before being able to play on the international level, so he was going with Serbia (which his family was pushing him to do, anyway).
But then, this writeup on ESPNsoccernet from two days ago says that he is still undecided, so who knows.

Thanks - One more question. How important is it for us to finish 1st or at least 2nd among the 4 qualifiers? Does it give you a much better shot of a tolerable group in S. Africa?
