I don't think they went to the "U" logo until the early to mid 70's. Before that it was nothing, numbers, Hurricane warning flags,UM then they probably paid some graphic designers to come up with a logo and the "U" was born.
And yes, that photo looks like a throw back uni. Think they wore them a few years ago.
