Why would you NOT want to take common sense steps
Well, this is the essence of the question, isn't it? Common sense is up for debate, and surely you can recognize that there are many ways to "skin a cat".

to lessen the possibility of injury,
"Lessen" is a quantitative word, but rather open ended. There are innumerable ways that we can "lessen the possibility of injury." Why don't we require rib protectors for all players? Neck guards? Arm pads? I could go on, but the point is that there is no end to the things we can do to make something marginally safer. The game has existed for a few years now, and your personal eye witnessing notwithstanding, injuries to players as a result of an occasional helmet popping off have NOT been a problem. Head injuries with helmets ON is the issue.
Making believe that we can make enough rules to prevent injury in this most violent of sports is what is absurd. That belief, or inclination to believe, is what will open up football to legal liability, once the general population makes an assumption, like you, that repeated tweaking of rules can make it 100% safe, no matter the negative consequences to the competitive aspect of the game.
quote:Now you're just making shite up. At no time prior to this concussion issue surfacing did anyone have a real beef with "all that wasted time" of putting helmets back on.
keep the game from being stopped unnecessarily?

Players wear loose-fitting helmets more often these days. If they'd tighten them up like they use to wear 'em, this wouldn't be a problem. To be more clear and specific, the same people whose helmets keep flying off are the same people whose jeans usually sag insanely low for no reason.

quote:No, it's a safety thing. If your helmet flies off, chances are you just got your bell rung--that's the logic behind it. The problem is that helmets fly off all the time because players are wearing their helmets more loosely nowadays, and if they'd tighten them up, they wouldn't fly off so often. I'm fine with this rule--players should wear their equipment properly so that this problem can be minimized.
I thought the rule got put in place over the guys constantly taking their helmets off on the field...

I'm not sure what a "message board asshat" is, but I would assume it probably includes using a message board specific insult in an ad hominem attack in the place of reasoned debate.

There is no "debate". The decision, based on data and input, was made by the Rules Committee (AD's and HC's) and approved by the full body of members. If you don't like the rule, call them, because I don't give a flying frick what you think. Hint: Neither will the Committee
Like I said, enjoy your ignorance...you wear it well.

You should seriously consider taking a break from posting. I think you don't have a basic understanding of what a More Sports message board is all about. You know, discussing (debating) different points of view.
Your latest "appeal to authority" is weak to say the least. Are you really taking the position that the rules committee is infallible and there are no reasonable alternatives? I suppose you think the enforcement branch is similarly consistent and free from bias or error.

It really is. What is the purpose?

Because common sense dictates that players will not have helmets that aren't fitted properly...and it negatively affects the game.
It is a stupid rule.

LOL at people saying players want loose helmets. Have you ever tried to catch a ball or move around with a loose helmet? It's incredibly uncomfortable and awkward.
And if they really cared about protection, then they would only allow players to wear the safest helmet on the market, which I believe right now is the Riddell 360.

There are rarely injuries once the helmet comes off however if a helmet is coming off often then perhaps they were not fit well. If they were not fit well then how well do you think it will protect from head injury? Players want the helmet to fit comfortably but that is not always safe much how not wearing a seat belt is more comfortable but not safe.
