it's not the ideal way, but it's probably the only viable way when there are something like 300 teams eligible. My problem is that the absolute best teams are not rewarded in any way besides playing a slightly shittier first round team. Nobody gets a bye, nobody gets home court advantage, etc.

you are probably correct that there haven't been as many undeserving title teams as most of us think, but that Kentucky/uconn title game from a few years ago was an absolute abomination.

For basketball? It's about the worst possible way.

Which is why the higher seeded team should host up through the E8. If WBB can do it then there's no excuse.

Sure. though the gap in quality between 14-16 seeds and the rest of the field is pretty significant. It's not a complete bye (hello, UMBC!), but close to it.

But the fact of that matter is that the tourney gives us a fair champ quite often, particularly for a system designed to encourage upsets. While every loser has reason to grouse, it borders on impossible to luck your way to six straight wins. The length of the tourney is what favors a top seed. It's long enough to weed out the pretenders while not being so long as to being the sort of slog in which perfection is impossible (or more accurately, a matter of luck).

Then why do the ratings tank? People like “Cinderella “ in theory but it turns out we’d rather watch Goliath
