Hamels peripherals are all in line. He's fine. He's pitching on a terrible team going nowhere at the moment

Cubs scouts were at the game watching him fwiw

Huh, that's good to know. I didn't see that. I understand that it's hard to pitch for a team that blows, but his numbers have not been good lately. With that said, I would certainly kick the tires if the price was within reason.

I would much rather pay a lot for 3-4 years of Hamels than have to sign David Price to a fricking 7-8 year, 200+ million deal.

This is the lone good reason I've heard for trading for Hamels this season. I definitely like the reasoning. I don't think Price or Hamels are the guys the Cubs covet. I think they really want Jordan Zimmermann.

I've never thought the Cubs would seriously trade for Hamels. But in the back of my mind is the waiver claim from last season. I just don't think they do that when they have the winter to pick from a good selection of pitching and not have to give up any players to do it.

Not to mention, pitching isn't really a problem for the Cubs.

I'd still like to see them get a good CF option, if they could swing that, this trade deadline, and then go after any of the number of SP's available at the end of the season. I've never thought price was a realistic option, and agreed with you that they'll target zimmerman.

Don't get me wrong, hamels would be great, but I still expect the asking price to be astronomical.

That's kind of my point. How realistic can they be when he's been terrible his last 9 starts.

Dexter Fowler picked a bad time, for him and the Cubs, to have a down year. He could have cashed in with the Cubs had he hit about .260-.270 and OBP'd over .350. There's no way the Cubs would have let him walk after putting up those numbers. But he doesn't play that great a CF and with the season he's having offensively, he's played himself out of a good deal.

ETA: I'm not worried...but, come on Kris.

Yap. I have zero concern over Hamels. The two bad starts won't affect his stock unless there is some underlying injury.

It would be awesome to have Hamels because then the pitching would be stacked going forward. It will be interesting who the Phillies want. At this point, I would move any bat outside of Rizzo, Bryant, Soler, Schwarber, and Russell. Maybe it is not enough, but I feel like there is plenty to offer between Baez, Castro, Almora, Alcantara, Vogelbach, Torres, etc.

5th starter is a question mark. If Hamels and Zimmermann both cost the exact same in a hypothetical, then I would prefer Hamels. I think he is better. Plus, Zimmermann will be looking for a nice payday. Hamels already has his deal in place.

yea...but then it's just money...and a compensation pick. That tips the scales for me. But that's also based on what I believe the phillies asking price would be.

I'd love Hamels. Tons of top end arms on the market should lower the value. I don't see us trading for a one year rental, unless it's a "small" deal for someone like Kazmir.

On Hamels deal, there's also possibility of us upping the prospect package and Philly eating some salary.

Hamels has thrown over 200 innings 5 years in a row. That frightens me. Zimmermann has thrown a lot less innings.

I'm still not really concerned by this. We made a run at sheilds (who we could also still trade for) and only lost due to not going to 4 years, attendance is up, tv ratings are up (while spending money you don't yet have re: new tv deal isn't the smartest, i do think it factors in) and ad revue is certainly up with the new video boards.

I'm not saying challenge the dodgers for payroll, but we're also not poor.

I think that's exactly what we should do. If we were within striking distance of the Central then sure...but for a 1 game playoff? No thanks.

again, i'm all for getting hamels, i just think they'll need a centerpiece that starts with russell/schwarber.

This is Ruben Amaro Jr we're talking about. He is probably asking for the entire rotation + Bryant.

Anybody read Bleacher Nation's minor league daily yet today? Should we be paying attention to Chesny Young?
quote:

Yesterday Myrtle Beach infielder Chesny Young, the Cubs’ 14th round pick in 2014, reached base for the 38th consecutive game. That established a new record for the Carolina League and put Young about halfway to the minor league record of 74.

At High-A, where Young has played only 59 games, the 22-year-old right-handed hitter has amassed a line of .348/.417/.413 with eight steals and a home run. He’s struck out just 31 times, and walked 25 times. For the season, including his 28 games in South Bend, his line reads .337/.407/.402.

In a season full of breakout performances (including Torres, Contreras, and Williams among others), Young has quietly put together one of the best. I would like to see what he can do at Double A before getting too excited by this guy (the extreme lack of power can be an issue as guys climb the ladder), but I suspect ‘everyday Major League second baseman’ is one of his possible futures.

I don't know much about him, but anyone hitting .348 has my attention.

Nothing like a trip to the bullpen with wood then strope to break a tie.

This teams lack of situational hitting is becoming absurd.

As soon as Strope came in I knew we were in trouble.

That's what I've been saying. That's the one thing that pisses me off with this team.... And it's damn near all of them with the exception of Rizzo who actually has an approach.
