I need your guidance. Like the dumbass I can still be, I decided—at 48—to pull the ol’ spikes and glove down from the shelf and un-retire. Playing in a 27+ league. I never wore an elbow or wrist guard before—not even sure they existed. We’ve played 2 games and I haven’t worn either, but most guys do. I’ve heard some war stories that make me feel think I should break down and get something.

I expect to be sore—I could barely move for 3 days after our 1st game—and expect some muscle tweaks and a weekly sore arm. But I want to prevent breaks. I broke my wrist playing in a league in Austin when I was 26, when I got hit with an upper 80s fastball that kept me in a full arm cast—from my wrist to my shoulder—for 3 months. That’s the kind of thing I want to prevent.

I bought an EvoShield elbow guard, but I couldn’t try it on to see how it felt and there is no returning of those once used. And I’ve been to 4 different sporting goods stores and none have a wrist guards to try on. And there’s a million on Amazon with differing reviews.

So, any guidance would be greatly appreciated. And my daughter is getting to the age where she’s gonna want/need some of these soon. (I will never be a part of purchasing an oven mitt, though.)

Also, it’s a wooden bat league, and I know nothing about those. A $60 bat in my hand feels as good as a $300 one. Before I swing it. It’s not like metal bats back in the days where nobody cared if you used theirs. But I’m terrified of using anybody’s wooden bat now. Need to get my own.

Again, any help would be much appreciated. TIA

I'm not a Chad, Carl, but all you need is a little dirt. Just rub it in and you'll be good as new.

nothing wrong with evo shield elbow guards and hand guards. bruce bolt makes products that are popular with some youth. I wouldn't over analyze that too much. Elbow guards come in different sizes so pay attention to that. You have some longer more adult sizing that gets to around 9" that protect your elbow/arm a bit better than the 6".

bats are where its at. So we looking for a wood bat? I'd assume your average human man size so maybe a 33"? I ordered my son a custom victus wood bat, its a 32.5". Custom bats are cool, sometimes not much more $.

can also browse sidelineswap or ebay for used bats and see if something catches your eye. Don't be afraid to make an offer and negotiate a little.

betterbaseball.com has a lot of wood victus bats with a $50 off sale too right now.

Agree with Chad. The evo shield stuff is designed to be fitted to you after you take it out of the box. It’s moldable to you and then dries to form so it fits the same every time. Just make sure you get the adult size.

Hand guards are pretty simple. Loop to your middle finger and Velcro to the batting glove. Nothing real special about any of them.

Sliding Mitts get a bad rap and youth definitely don’t need them. But if you get your hand stepped on by an adult in metal spikes it’s worth it. For your purposes probably not. But HS and College guys that hand is worth something to them.

Bats…Marucci makes some good ones. We’ve really liked Victus and Old Hickory. Most of them for a good one are $170-$225 and you get what you pay for. Baum makes a composite wooden bat that’s legal in most HS summer leagues. They are extremely durable and won’t hardly break. They’re also more expensive but if you’re worried about breaking it then it’s worth it. They are very popular and swing really well.

27+, probably still throwing some heat. I’m 45, played college ball, and just realized how bad my hand-eye coordination has fallen off over a whiffle ball game this past weekend.

Buy every piece of protection gear you can. I’ve thought about playing in an old guys league, but I don’t think it’s worth it. Please give us updates after your games. Good luck man!
