UNC RB didn’t need to score there. He literally just gave WF a life line. Add in the unsportsmanlike and WF about to have good field position.

If you have all 3 you could get the ball back with 40 seconds even if you don’t recover the onside kick. Now you have to recover it.

UNC needed to control the ball. They WF would have had to burn one timeout with that first down, two more for first and second, and then UNC runs it down to 15 seconds on third.
