re: Can The NFL Fix The Officiating Problem?

quote:Something I'm noticing with these catch/TD overrulings, the replay officials are approaching it with a "no catch" bias. Meaning, regardless of the call on the field, the replay ref seems to want to have definitive proof OF the catch, not definitive proof it WASN'T. Which basically is overriding the call on the field.
Secondly the catch rules drastically need to be clarified, especially plays like the one in Pittsburgh last week. Something like that needs to be a td. Idk what happened in the Pats game today, but evidently the Bills got hosed on another TD catch that was review and overturned with insufficient evidence. Maybe someone else can speak to that, didn't see it myself. Somehow, officiating has become WORSE with video review. I'm not sure how to fix that aside from actually clarifying what it means for something to be conclusive or inconclusive, and also altering the catch rules.
In other words, if you have any doubt, it's not a catch.
I THOUGHT the rule of thumb was, you honor the call on the field unless it's absolutely clear it was wrong.

One of the funniest things in NFL history was when everybody was complaining about the replacement officials a few years ago and how we needed those REAL officials to get things right!

You fix the problem by convincing numerous, very wealthy, people across the country to create and fund a new football league with massive amounts of cash, and put the NFL out of business.
Of course, you'd have to make sure that you don't fall into the same trap that the NFL has fallen into, letting gambling and fantasy football corrupt the outcomes the on-field competition.

Need younger more athletic guys, and more of them on the field/in the booth making calls. Officiating has become an abomination and is causing the games to be extremely hard to watch far too often.. they need sensors in the ball, laser guides, on site video review crews for EVERY play that relay the calls to the refs.... Idgaf, personally, if there is a flag on every play until it gets the players to play the way the rules stipulate...
home teams seem to get all the calls in most games and it’s a fricking joke how obvious it is...just a consistently horrible product week in and week out. It has really sucked the fun out of watching the nfl for me

THE NFL is no different than congress, law after law after law, so much red tape you can't even get anything done, at some point you gotta throw the whole thing in the trash.
The reffing is absolute trash and has been for a while now. Too much player safety crap.
Is there even a punt or kick off where there isn't a penalty? NO!
I always say fans are more mad about calling BS then letting an obvious call slide, when in doubt hold the flag, you wait, in the playoffs they will let them slide as they usually do.
The NFL is all but done, XFL football talk is happening again and I would welcome a league where they started tackling again, yes that means the QBs as well, and the salaries need to come waaaaay back down, these idiots are paid way to much money. FLacco, Stafford, what jokes.
Rodger Goodell will go down in history as the man who single handily destroyed the NFL, once again you see what happens when liberals get their hands on something, it's ruined.

quote:Pretty much. They rig the outcome but they also rig games to be closer and more exciting.
there is no "officiating problem" that needs fixing. the refs "can" do a great job of fairly officiating games if they want to. the league tells the refs which teams to help and that "can" usually tip the scales enough to make them win. that is the problem that needs fixing, they just need to stop rigging the games.
The holding penalty is the best tool. It's inexplicably a 10 yard penalty (enough to kill most drives), despite everything else on the line being 5 yards. It happens on pretty much every play, to some degree or other, so they can pick and choose when and where they call it.

Pass interference is the easiest call for an official to change the game. They can call it every play on one team and never call it on the other.

I do and don't like the camera can see at a speed and clarity beyond what the refs can witness and judge...
But that makes for a rather uninteresting game sometimes.
It would all the time of everything was from cameras.
As some have said, step one is make clearer rules and be consistant in enforcing them.

No lie, we got all the calls yesterday and including some real ticky tack calls and a huge flag pickup.
But F* THE FALCONS. Katrina refs, bitch!

This is my thinking. There was a play yesterday that could have been PI against Latimore on Jones.
At game speed it was a bang bang play but in slow motion you can see Latimore got their early.
Replay has somewhat spoiled the tv viewer
