Can someone find the official rule on the chain dimensions?

Idgaf about the cowboys or the raiders, but I was under the impression that the chain (links) was 10 yards long, not stick-to-stick. I can’t find the “official” rule anywhere and don’t have access to a set of sticks.

Those would be the same lengths though. Both sides of the chain end at the sticks.

The links are connected to clips that are connected to a D-ring welded to the sticks, sonthe actual measurement of the links would be a good 4-5” less than measuring stick to stick

But isn't that little clip a part of it though? They've always shown the nose of the ball hitting where the stick is for a first down.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Even then there space between the clip and the stick.

Yes, it's pole to pole. I don't know why they make the chain links a different color than the clips.

Only the NFL could make measuring 10 yards confusing as frick.

I heard a while back that it is visibility. Easy to order/buy the chain coated, but just use bare metal for the connections.

Who knows where they put the chain when they measure from the beginning. We only see the end of the chain near the football. We never see the beginning of the chain.

It would be interesting to measure the NFL chains as well as other sports dimensions to see if they are as long as they’re supposed to be.

its 10 yards from inside the stick shaft to inside the stick shaft so if the ball touches the stick you made 10 yards.

the "real question to look at is how they determine where the stick marks the line of scrimmage, that can vary if the stick is placed centered on the line or behind it just touching as it is supposed to be. game of inches and all that, sometimes that 1" decides games.

I've read that when it's not a crucial call, the refs usually try to spot the ball on the back of the yard marker specifically to make it easier to measure out the chains. Of course, this occasionally fricks teams out of a half yard on the spot.

Pretty much a moot point. Trying to judge exactly where the ball went out when one is running with the ball in his hand will not be an exact science either way. Really not that big of a deal.

Unless the NFL implements actual technology by implanting a transmitter into the ball. The game would have to adjust to where the center of the ball is when the runner is down, instead of the nose of the ball, but I think that would be worth it.
