Can someone explain why Bregman wasn't a candidate for gold glove?

Highest fielding % of all 3rd basemen. How could he not be in top 3?

His defense was meh until mid season, still adjusting to 3rd. Should be a GG contender next year.

What is meh about having highest fielding %?

Without looking at the stats, he had more errors than you’d guess.

Fielding % doesn’t tell the whole story, he wasn’t making all the plays you’d expect from GG 3rd basemen, particularly to his backhand. 2nd half defense was excellent and playoff defense was elite.

he punched Peter Gammons in the dick
a lot of these awards are best on a perception based on paster performance as opposed to who really is the best player

He was 14th amongst 3rd baseman in uzr/150. Haven't looked at his DRS

Do either of those #s get wacky due to shifting? Bregs was playing SS 20% of the time

I’m sure there are plenty of advanced stats calculated by out of work actuaries that indicate he sucks.

Bregs was toiling in anonymity for a while because he didn't play for the Cubs, Yankees, or Dodgers. And recall that he played SS on and off for about a month while Correa was down...
Since the Astros made an epic trek through the playoffs and since Bregs was got a lot of pub for his defense, he is probably a lead candidate to get it next year.
He might win a gold glove next year (as long as he has a good year) based on what he did late in the season this year...if that makes sense.

Uzr doesn't. DRS is a better stat

This illustrates the point I made in the post just above this one. Bregman is now on everyone's radar, whereas he was not this year.

What? He was the unanimous No. 1 prospect for some time and was fast tracked to the bigs. He was only anonymous to the casual fan. Certainly not to baseball writers.

I am not saying that people didn't know who he was....I am just saying that the "casual fan" wasn't aware of how incredibly well he was playing at 3rd base.

I guess the advanced metrics weren’t aware either. They’ve already mentioned his UZR. Fangraphs has his defensive value for the 2017 regular season as below average. He had -3 defensive runs saved at 3B and -2 at SS. His range rating at 3B was also negative which is surprising.
He killed it in the playoffs, but he had no business in the GG convo b

Fielding percentage just means you handled the balls well that came to you.

I'm not a fan of UZR/150. Advanced defensive metrics need time to stabilize, and UZR/150 is an attempted work around.
