ESPN must be going into rage right about now.

I'm sure that they just found out about this today.

And there is absolutely nothing to show on Espn this time of year. Why don't they just pony up the dough and get the coverage?

I think ultimately not having ESPN cover the games like it should hurts NBC. If ESPN was covering it and NBC allowed highlights to be shown, the cross promotion would draw more viewers to prominent events.
Instead, ESPN gives a half effort on the coverage, and rightfully so. Why should they help NBC out when NBC won't allow the nation's highlight station to show highlight?
I get the reasons why it's done, drawing folks to their highlight show and the new NBC sports and all that. But it totally hurts NBC to do this.

That's not what I said, dumbass.
ESPN is used to being the one raping everyone else in sports coverage. Now they are unable to do shite about showing the biggest sporting event in the world.

I fricking hate them. You can't stream their content online unless you're a cable or satellite subscriber. They're like the print newspaper business trying to hold back the internet.

ESPN has been doing a pretty good job of ruining what NBC is showing on tape delay in primetime by sending out text messages with the results.

Between the text messages and going online, NBC's primetime coverage is already been spoiled for probably 50% of the viewers if not more.

You realize espn3 is the same? Along with HBOgo and a number of other online streams managed by one network.

having olympic highlights would take away from yankees redsox coverage

That's generally standard across all media platforms. all sports and NCAA conferences have some sort of restrictions in play too.
SEC tried to impose a 72-hour "blackout" of any video footage from being aired from the time it was shot. It caught a lot of flack before it ever really became a thing and never happened.

I don't have cable or satellite and I can watch ESPN3. I'm not even trying to steal content, I'd be very willing to subscribe online to NBC's Olympic coverage. But I refuse to be locked in monthly to 200 crappy channels just so I can watch two weeks of track&field.
