Oh dear lord

That kid has bust written all over him. He may turn out to be a solid college player but to label him generational is insane. Kid should probably be playing tight end. His game is bullying 5’9” white kids and highlight breakaway dunks. That is almost impossible to project at the next level.

If he was 6’9” and had a jumper, I think you might have something here.

Coach K went on Cal's podcast last year. Seemed like the two actually kind of liked each other.

I guess when Coach K gets the top 3 high school recruits in one year, that might change things.

Good Lord, that is a straight up lie.

If there is one state and one fanbase in America that will take of you for the rest of America, it is Kentucky basketball.

He's not talking about being bought a beer, a free meal at Waffle House and a $50 handshake.

He's talking about Duke alums and the school in positions of power at Fortune 500 companies or politics.

I know both types.

The state of Kentucky is littered with former basketball players in relatively cushy jobs. One of them was even elected Secretary of Agriculture.

The only former Dukie that I know of on Wall Street spent only one year at Duke and then transferred out. Duke isn't send basketball players to top-of-the-line firms and organizations. It's sending lacrosse players and soccer players.

Well the main reason is because they are all in the NBA or playing professionally elsewhere until they are 30-35. And then so many others are in coaching (Scheyer, Dawkins, James, Carrawell, Wojo, Collins, Amaker, Blakeney, McLeod I think, etc) or commenting (Abdelnaby and Gminski) or management (Langdon, Ferry), and I think Melchionni is an agent. Pretty much across the board.

I think the coaching, commenting, GM, or agent jobs are what the guys are interested in if they can’t make it in the NBA.

The guys with corporate jobs are the older guys or guys who aren’t interested in basketball like Alarie, Davis, Caldbeck before #MeToo. Are you talking about Michael Thompson?

Bill Jackman

What you were describing is another way of what I was trying to say and is the same with most of the blue blood programs - the former players are all either still playing, in coaching, or involved in the game in some form. Same thing with most of the big boy football programs as well, now that I come to think of it.

It's just extraordinarily difficult to start a career working your way up the corporate ladder at the places that previous poster was talking about when you don't quit playing until your 30's. I know of a couple of examples from Notre Dame (Justin Tuck just is at Wharton right now, a former cornerback is a VP at Goldman), but that just isn't common at all, and I don't think K is promising that crap like Calipari says. He knows that these kinds of kids are going to make a fortune in basketball and basketball alone.

Kentucky has a scholarship for players who leave for the NBA or overseas and come back to complete their degree (Cawood Scholarship). Cal is saying once you’re in good academic standing while playing at UK, we will take care of you making sure you complete the degree (which many former players do).

I actually think Cal is actually a pretty honest guy that would be cool to have a beer with when talking to recruits and others, and coach k is the slimeball a-hole.

I mean I think Calipari is honest with these kids. But I also think he has no interest in them going to classes their 2nd semester freshman year. I think Coach K is likely a little more intense about academics for freshmen.

Cal tells kids "play for me for a year, have a great time, and go to the NBA"

The frick if he doesn’t. Cal does not want a APR ding. Think what you want, they go to class just for that.

Guys, I ain't defending Cal. But I hate the narrative that Coach K is the patron saint of basketball. People think he's above being dirty because he looks like the president of the chess club and has a cute nickname. Don't fool yourself.

I know Bobby Knight isn't completely a saint in any way but he said this in 2011:

"Kentucky, year before last, started five players in the NCAA Tournament games that had not been to class that semester," Knight said, according to the YouTube video shot at the Honeywell Center in Wabash, Ind., on Saturday. "And that's that one-and-done philosophy that we have now."

I think if a kid leaves after the spring, spring doesn't count, only fall (I think).

So the kid, if he was for sure leaving, may not be going to classes today (for example)

The same Bobby Knight that was abusing his players? And no, they have to complete the spring semester in good standing...if not, the school get hit with the APR score. You better your arse the players who declare are finishing up their spring class work.

I know NFL guys who are leaving early don't take their finals their spring semester. You're saying all the Kentucky 1 and done guys take their finals, study for them and pass them?

I'm skeptical of that (not just at Kentucky mind you, but everywhere)

Yeah, the players need to take the requisite number of classes and maintain a certain GPA through their spring semester in order to keep the APR levels high.

In Cal's first year, I am almost positive that Orton and Bledsoe left with 0.0 GPAs which hurt them a lot on APR and it led to complaints about the one and done culture. I think in the subsequent years, UK has done a lot better with keeping the guys involved in school. Maybe a guy here or there has done that, but it's been much less in scale.

Look at it this way. The season ends in late March or early April. The workout process is much more relaxed for the NBA draft than the NFL draft, and guys only have to stay "engaged"in classwork for another 4 weeks.

The football players have their season end the first week of January so if they are enrolled, then they have to sit through another 15-16 weeks of school. I think it's a lot easier to keep guys engaged for 4 weeks than 16 weeks.

I think the major college programs get around this by not having their top NFL prospects even enroll for their final semester. It's a loophole but if guys aren't enrolled in the second semester, they get out of APR numbers as long as they leave with good GPAs and class counts through their 5th or 7th semesters.

In fairness to Calipari, he's never presented himself as a pure as the wind driven snow kind of guy. He just arranges for people like Derek Rose to skip his ACT's and have someone take them......or help hook Marcus Camby up with an agent before his eligibility was up.

Pitino ............ aw hell, I can't........they are both equally as dirty.............Calipari just seems to be better at it

Orton is the only player that did not complete his academic obligations. He is the only hit we had since Cal has been here. We currently have a perfect APR.
