35 years ago today. I remember it well, and found it hilarious

John Elway still bitter about that game though it's been 35 years removed?

Would you agree that it is the greatest play in college football history?

I wonder what would be the ruling had one of the band members accidentally knock the runner down before he got into the end zone.

I can't really say. There's been a lot of great plays in football history. But I certainly think it should be in the top ten or top five for sure. I remember the trombone player getting leveled at the end.

Good question. I think today, it would be ruled interference and an untimed down played at the end.

and none of it should have mattered because his knee was down on one of the tosses long before it got to the band.

This is the story that never was.

I think that shows John Elway to be wound a little too tight if he can't laugh about that game after all these years. I mean, after the charmed life he's had, why be bitter about some meaningless game 35 years ago?

I think they would have awarded him the touchdown, similar to the ruling in the Cotton Bowl when Bama came off the sideline.

Here's the final Stanford drive and the apparent winning FG before the final play...called by KGO's Joe Starkey. (Current Cal and former 49ers announcer.) LINK

It was until until Kick Six.

Because Stanford lost Elway never got to go to a bowl game.

As someone stated, the play was already dead if it got replayed today and no TD would be granted, since one of the laterals was after a knee was down.

Though, I would be curious if it would be untimed down or granted if the scenario was without the knee being down issue.

He still claims you can't score a TD if the band is out on the field. That it's illegal.

So that's now a defense? A kick returner is about to score a TD so rush your band out on the field?

I've seen the play a hundred times.

There is NO WAY that's conclusive at all.

In fact, you can rationally argue his knee ISN'T down.

The ball comes out so quick...it's bang - bang - the ball is coming out of his hands as his knee is going down.

Two things I never realized about the play until now...

Why did Stanford not call the TO for the FG with less time on the clock?

And the 15 yard penalty for excessive celebration didn't help them either.
