MONTREAL -- A Quebec group wants to bring an NBA team to Montreal even though the league has no current plans to expand. The business group is led by former federal cabinet minister and senator Michael Fortier. He said Wednesday he has spoken with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, saying his group has "taken the decision to prepare for when expansion does take place." The group has been meeting with potential Canadian and foreign investors. Fortier estimated a franchise would cost $1.5 billion to $2 billion, but no public funding would be required. He says Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson is open to an NBA team playing at the NHL club's Bell Centre.

Expansion teams to Seattle and Montreal. Move the Pels to the East for some reason.

It will fail. Like baseball.

Isn't Montreal famous for their strip clubs?

If true, they will instantly become the #1 destination for free agents

Baseball failed because of the crappy stadium and the 1994 strike
The Expos could have legitimately won the WS that year

And the 300 or 400 Expos fans would have been jumping for joy.

Basketball is easy. If Orlando, OKC, Salt Lake, Memphis, Sacramento can support teams, then Montreal certainly can.

The average attendance for an expos game in 1993 (pre-strike) was 20,265
It'd be 24th in MLB for 2017
I believe basketball is more popular in Canada than baseball as evidenced by the Raptors having the 3rd largest average attendance in the NBA
Montreal also has the 2nd best average attendance in the NHL and a media market the size of Las Vegas

NBA wants San Diego the most. Seattle is the nostalgic favorite, but San Diego and maybe Vegas make the most financial sense.

montreals metro population is like almost 5 million

I do a lot of work in Montreal, and never took it as an NBA town. When I was up in June, when the NBA and NHL playoffs were on, it was like pulling teeth to get an NBA game shown.
It is hockey, hockey, hockey, and then more hockey.
Their baseball fans though small were hardcore. If they built a stadium not at the Olympic Park it would do well.

Jesus. The NBA is a terrible league and you want to add another franchise? My god.

That stadium isn't crappy. They failed because it isnt a baseball town.

You just compared Montreal city proper with MSA's. Montreal metro is over 4 million.
