Will the Donkeys trade up to make sure they get the QB Payton wants?
payton's MO has always been to trade down and get the guys he wants. What do the broncos have to go up besides packaging courtland sutton

Besides I bet he picks up Zack Wilson after the jets cut him

Not really. Payton has been getting his name spelled wrong on the Saints board for 20 years so that’s my default

Payton was the coach of the Saints for over 15 years and right up until the end idiots were ranting about Shawn Peyton

Draft picks vs. Money, cap space?

At a press conference after the trade, Johnson bragged that he committed "The Great Train Robbery”.

Johnson cut the players he traded for to keep all the draft picks under the deal.

Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1990
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1990
Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional on cutting Solomon)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional on cutting Howard)
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1992 (conditional on cutting Holt)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (condition met by trading away Nelson)
Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional on cutting Stewart)

Naw. You need to check what the Vikings did in the 90s. Went to the playoffs 7 times and only had one losing season (Walker’s first full season with them). The trade hurt but didn’t destroy the franchise.

The Broncos wasted 2 seasons with Russell, have to punt on a third, and likely a 4th before they can even be a playoff team again. The Walker trade was a fleecing but at least understandable (all-pro RB in his prime) Everyone told the Broncos not to make this trade since Russell was cooked and then they doubled down on it with the extension - which he didn’t even make it to.

Props to Denver for doing what pretty much no other nfl team has or would have balls to do.

Solid move by coach and org.

He's not worth keeping around, even paying a huge cap hit is better than having him QB the team

Jamarcus was on a rookie deal. He was a bust but it didnt screw the franchise for years. Other decisions screwed the Raiders.

Rookie contracts were absolutely debilitating back then when a high pick busted. The rookie scale didn’t start until 2011, and guys like Russell helped usher it in.

Well this tells you exactly what SP will do,REACH for
a QB if he cant draft up to the top 4.SP was the reason
for the SAINTS lack of talent,he allways drafted players
with injury problems or drafted players woh werent rated
to be picked as high.SP sucks as an general manager.

True but the teams had no say so in the compensation of a draft pick. It was all determined by draft slot. At least with JaMarcus there was some unlocked potential to him. The Broncos gave up on basically 3 drafts for a guy everyone knew was past his prime with 2 years left on his deal and STILL decided to give him a massive 5 year extension.
