Four-time WNBA champion and 2014 WNBA MVP Maya Moore announced on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday that she will not be returning to the court for this upcoming WNBA season.
Moore, 31, last played in the WNBA during the 2018 season, before announcing in February 2019 that she would be taking some time away from basketball to focus on family and "ministry dreams that have been stirring in my heart for many years.
For the next year and a half, she committed to working for the release of Jonathan Irons from prison, a man from her childhood home state of Missouri who had been convicted of burglary and assault with a deadly weapon in 1998 when he was 16 years old.
Last March, a judge ruled that prosecutors had suppressed evidence that would have bolstered Irons' defense. His conviction was vacated and he was released from prison on July 1. Moore and Irons, 41, married last summer.
This is big news folks. Maya Moore social justice hero.

How much cap space will this open up?

True but at least she has the guts to leave her sport during her prime years for a cause she believes is more important
"Highly Educated" LBJ nor any of the other NBA phonies would dare do that

Wait wtf how did she fall in love with a dude 10 years older than her than had been in prison since she was 6

I’ve been patiently waiting this news since she decided to step away since February 2019, thank you so much solus for passing it along.

Met him through either prison ministry or Innocence Project type work?

where else can she go and make 15k a year like that??

I cannot fathom how you people criticize people for sticking to their convictions at their own personal cost.
Yall constantly criticize pro athletes for exact opposite of this.

There will never be WNBA news that I consider “breaking”.

I knew she had been trying to get some guy out of jail but had no idea they got married. Yikes.

I have nothing but respect for Maya.
She was a solid WNBA player who was one of the faces of the league, and she walked away to pursue something she was passionate about. She believed that guy was innocent so much, that she was willing to leave her entire career to fight for that.
Obviously we know her paycheck is a bit shorter than other athletes, but how many athletes are willing to sacrifice their paycheck for something they truly believe in.

Fair point but not exactly similar situations.
Lebron would be giving up hundreds of millions. Moore can probably make more doing this race grift than she does in the WNBA.
