On Monday the Atlanta Braves announced that they have released Adrian Gonzalez, who was acquired in a five-player trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend.

The trade sent Gonzalez, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir, Charlie Culberson and cash considerations to the Braves in exchange for Matt Kemp. The move helped out with salary issues for both teams as it allowed the Dodgers to get below the luxury tax threshold in 2018, while the Braves saved money in 2019 as Kemp still has two years remaining on his contract and all the players they got are set to become free agents at the end of 2018, with the exception of Culberson.

Gonzalez held a full no-trade clause, so he had to waive it to make the trade happen. The reason he was willing to do so was because there was no clear path for playing time with the Dodgers in 2018, and him being released gives him the ability to assign with a team of his choice.

Despite being in the big leagues for 14 years, this marks the first time that Gonzalez will hit free agency as he signed a seven-year extension with the Boston Red Sox in 2011 after being traded from the San Diego Padres.

I wouldn't imagine there would be a huge market for him, so his FA experience likely won't be what it could have been in 2011.

Between him and Kemp, this trade is good but funny.

36 years old with a bad back. I would think he's going to end with a contract laden with incentives, and little guaranteed money. Same for Kemp.

I believe he is owed $21 Mill this year by the Braves regardless of where he signs. So some team might end up signing him for one year at league minimum to take a chance given the situation.

Thought it was weird when he was yatching in europe instead of being with the team in the WS

Pads should bring him back home and sell a few seats

Actually it’s like 17mil I believe. Braves also will be on the hook for Kazmir’s pretty hefty 2018 salary.

Both come off the books at the end of 2018 in time for the Braves to enter a robust free agency market that year. 2019 should be an exciting one for Braves fans.

2018 was the absolute earliest possible compete date and that was definitely early.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if this team is able to win 80-85 games.

They were fun to watch last year until Freddie got hurt, Kemp kept going down and we inevitably traded off assets with value.

I’m excited about this year. Acuna Show gonna be lit dawg.

The team might be able to win 80 games just by showing up and being relatively healthy in the east.

Marlins might be the worst team in baseball. The Mets have 2 hitter, 2 starters, and 2 relievers, and a bunch of really young guys that havent exactly shown much so far(Nimmo, Dom Smith, Rosario, Cecchini). The Phillies will probably our biggest challenger for second, but they were 6 games behind us last year, and are counting on a lot of young guys just like us, so no one really knows where they will be.
