What makes it a bigger risk?
And Allen has ran this offense on his own and been unreal. But it has been 5 different OCs in 7 years
Just how good could he be if you kept the same system in place for multiple years? And maybe if you allow the defense to be run by a coordinator instead of someone that also has head coach responsibilities in will work out better
The playoff defense honestly can’t get much worse. It’s almost dead last for all playoff teams the last few years

I'm not following those stats, but the point I was making is that competition gets better. And, the team you field in the playoffs might not be the same one you fielded early in the season. And, a team that is thinner in talent (due to poor drafting, etc.) might fall off more than another.
In other words, it might be worth considering that McDermott wasn't the entire problem when it comes to playoff performance.

I mean I don’t think it helps that after it happened he just jogged away like nothing had ever happened. Same thing with the Saints no call. Tommy Lee Lewis just got up and went to the sidelines. Like get pissed about it and plead your case.

I asked a question. What makes hiring a top defensive guy as HC a bigger risk?
quote:
Allen has ran this offense on his own and been unreal. But it has been 5 different OCs in 7 years
So, keep Brady? Wouldn't that be more of an option if you hire a defensive minded coach? You are suggesting hiring an offensive mind which would necessarily change the OC.

ok
But, the question is what is the best move forward.
Your entire case has been that the offense is way beyond good enough and that the defense has been way beyond below par to win in the playoffs. And, the constant in that equation for the offense is Josh Allen.
Therefore, don't you solve the problem best by hiring a defensive guy that can hide whatever shortcomings the Bills currently have?

I hate that the person who did that graphic, didn't go the extra mile for a better comparison.
I'm going to assume it's worse for every team since your average playoff team is going to be good (need a minimum postseason game played for sample size). So then the question would be how much worse.
Obviously, most likely still bad, but that would be good added context.

No no, I thought the same as you at first. This is bad, but likely not horrific
However
The playoff column is ONLY PLAYOFF TEAMS since 2020
So your context isnt needed .
Column 1 is regular season
So out of 32 teams
Column 2 is only compared to playoff teams while in the playoffs
I think it’s been like 25 ish teams over that span
That’s what makes this McDermott ranking so bad. Dude is one of the worst in the playoffs period

Burrow did have a good seat to watch the playoffs again so it’s true he got a good look

If Josh "game managed" the offense, the Bills would get crushed 35-10 in the playoffs. He has to leap tall buildings in a single bound or Buffalo is screwed.
Posted on 1/22/26 at 4:10 pm to SoFla Tideroller
Yep. Buffalo dominated time of possession against Denver and the bills defense still allowed 4 TD drives of 65 yards or longer
Bills offense in the playoffs has to be aggressive as hell to have any shot

That's also his biggest weakness. He tries to do too much himself which in turn hurts the team.
He's surrounded by shite. He HAS to do alot to keep them competitive.

That graphic saying the defense goes from 1st to below average in the playoffs/ Bills are playing shite team's during the season. In the playoffs the talent levels out.

Yeah, Cooks needed to act more like he had caught it.
What Lewis should have done is stay on the ground and grab his head, since by 2018 rules it was not only DPI but head-to-head against a defenseless receiver.

Hell, just look at bills vs chiefs
They have played 4 playoff games and 4 regular season games with Allen
The bills offense scores 1.5 pts MORE vs the chiefs in the playoffs
The bills defense gives up a full 6 points more in the playoffs
That right there is the story in a nutshell of McDermott
