Boise State lost because they refused to adjust their game plan.

Penn State defense clearly committed to stopping the run from the very beginning of the game. So Boise just kept trying to bunch up and run Jeanty.

But, they had success spreading out and throwing short quick passes, deep middle passes. Play action with QB under center confused the shite outta Penn State, too

Why can’t OC’s adjust their calls to what’s working in the game? Boise coulda won last night.

Because they are so smart. You see, they know way more about football then the rest of us.

Their QB threw 3 ints to 1 TD. Maybe the OC did not really trust the QB to effectively pass if that was all they were doing.

Penn State’s idiot OC refusing to run the ball was even worse

I’ll play devils advocate because it’s easy to sit back and be an armchair QB.

The only other game that their QB threw more passes was the Oregon game (makes sense considering they trailed for much of both games).

Jeanty had more carries in 7 other games this year.

They probably threw the ball more than what was originally game-planned, which they should have considering what Penn State was doing to stop the run. If they throw it 10 more times and Jeanty has 10 less carries and they still lose, everyone would say “how do you only hand the ball to Jeanty 20 times!!”

Also give the OC credit for some of the play calls that did work. The FB dive off Jeanty’s motion was great…2 or 3 Penn State defenders left the box with Jeanty. That was good stuff.

So you just abandon the run?

If they quit running the ball, you would complain they got away from what got them there.

No. If I was OC, seeing that Penn State is stopping the run, and that my QB is doing really well in the 1st half with short passes from a spread formation …. I’d skew my mix of pass and run more heavily toward passing plays.

It’s an “optimal mix problem”. Not a binary “either/or” problem.

No I wouldn’t. Not if the D was stuffing the run. Not if the D had 8 players within 5 yards of the LOS.

And especially not if the O was having success with short/medium passes.

I thought Boise should have used more motion with Jeanty

This. PSU’s OC at times gets way too cute and forgets that they are getting 9 yards a pop on the ground. Cost them in the BIG Championship game, and gave momentum back to Boise.

If Penn St OC wasn't an idiot, game wouldn't have been as close as it was
