Salary-Cap Hell
How many years has it been?

was shockingly joined at safety by former Bills Pro Bowler Jairus Byrd, arguably the highest-rated defensive player available at the beginning of free agency. Even though the Saints were only a few million dollars under the salary cap and hadn’t yet resolved the contract status of star tight end Jimmy Graham, the Saints gave Byrd a six-year, $54 million deal in hopes of forming the league’s best safety tandem east of Seattle.
Exactly. We were in worse shape last offseason.
We are not in salary cap hell
quote:
That’s without new deals for several starters who will be unrestricted free agents, including Mark Ingram, Jonathan Goodwin, and Parys Haralson.
The horror

The problem is, they still won’t have any real space to upgrade their roster.
Well we're going to extend Brees and restructure Lewis too.
Also are going to let go several of the following:
Evans - saves $6 million
Grubbs - saves $3.6 million
Colston - $4.3
Hawthorne - $3
Bunkley - $2.9
Watson $1.5

They're going to have limited flexibility on a team that obviously needs to improve all over the field, not sure what's funny

Well 1, that isn't true
2, the areas that we need to improve are the areas that we can save money on.
Evans - saves $6 million
Grubbs - saves $3.6 million
Colston - $4.3
Hawthorne - $3
Bunkley - $2.9
Watson $1.5
Not to mention that it frees up a TON of space for 2016
Throw in an extension with Brees and a restructure with Lewis, and we have way more flexibility than previous seasons
Guard is a cheap position to take care of in FA and the draft. So on defense, we need an ILB, a #2 CB, and probably a dlineman for depth.
We'll also get a compensation draft pick for losinh Ingram and possibly Robinson.

Why does literally EVERY story about Louisiana has to use the phrase "on the bayou?" Just like every time a Houston sports team loses a game, everybody has to come up with the headline "Houston, We Have a Problem" like they think they are the first fricking people to come up with this.

Being from New Orleans, I never think of the bayou when I think of home.
It's a city.

A cautionary tale on how NOT to run your franchise. Just the 'Aints bein' the 'Aints.

So your plan is to cut even MORE players from your offensive line?
I get that Grubbs and Evans haven't lived up to yalls expectations this year, but with what money do yall plan to replace them with? I can see cutting 1, but both?
Draft picks would have to be the only way I would assume? Then you would have a shitty center and 2 untested guards.

So cut Evans so you can save 6 mil while you still have to pay him 5 and replace him?
Those savings add up to around 20 mil. So they'd have to find the cap space to just be able to sign replacements and their draft class by re-structuring others (costs money down the line). I don't see how they could find the room to actually go out and sign free agents that aren't low cost replacements for the guys they just cut.

I think one player that will be tough to replace, but might be cut will be Jordan Cameron. Just looking at over the cap calculator, cutting him frees up 7 million and leaves no dead money.
Either that or sign him to a long term deal with almost all of his money being in bonuses next year.
But at that point, you're continuing to put yourself in the same position that you have been in for a while now. Last year, these backloaded contracts finally caught up, and it is continuing this year.

I never get tired of hearing that one.
How many years has it been?
In all seriousness, the first instance it was widely used had to be with the 49ers of the late '90s, early 2000s.

Uh, sunk cost. His play is not worth $6 million and
he's been terrible. He's the 3rd worst guard in the NFL in terms of pass blocking efficiency. Not to mention that it frees up more money in the future too.
It is a cheap position to replace and an easy position for rookies to step into. It is also our weakness on offense this season.

It also leaves us us with about $55 million for 2016 allowing restructures.
Did you even read the article? We're going to extend Drew, restructure Byrd and Junior. We also have other options to free up even more money. And the plan is to obviously push the money until Drew is done.

I don't think you understand the salary cap. Also, signing draft picks is very cheap these days. The guys listed aren't performing. And we were in a worse situation last year when we extended Graham and signed the Byrd.

Seems like saints fans are in denial about this situation.
Look at what we were able to do last offseason!

I just gave you an in depth breakdown of the entire situation.
Seems like you have no idea how the salary cap actually works and are shortsighted. Like how you pointed to my list and stated that it only saves $20 million while ignoring that it leaves around $55 million in free space for the 2016 season. You also don't seem to understand what a sunk cost is.
And most Saints fans understand our strategy. We're going to push the bubble down the road until Drew is done.
