Big difference is bird and magic are legends and people watched them year after year. I have never watched a WNBA game and never will

The issue is that Reese isn't nearly the player that Clark is.
And yet we all had to listen to constant media lies that they were comparable or this manufactured rivalry. Juju Watkins will be her rival in the WNBA, not the can't make a layup fashionista Angel Reese.

I used to have this on a VHS as a kid.

in 1978 Bird and Magic played on a college pre-olympic team together the summer before Bird’s senior year at the FIBA World Invitational Tournament
they knew each other and had respect for each other before the NCAA CG in 1979
when they entered the NBA they were already well established stars that were comfortable handling the ball in the spotlight and leading teams. they were not the political lightning rods that clark and reese have become. the MSM was much different then and covered athletes differently
the lunch pail white guy vs the flashy black guy was a narrative around the 79 NCG and into their NBA careers but neither guy embraced the BS, they only cared about winning
Angel Reese is not magic, clark is not bird. Reese plays more like anthony mason and clark is more like steph curry
but it seems for the WNBA, there is no such thing as bad publicity and reese has done all she can to be portrayed as some sort of villain while also demanding to be loved which is really strange. I think her PR team and the league have done Reese no favors. clark however seems to be content playing the game and just being herself

I’m confused as to why of all the sports, women’s basketball seems to be the only sport infested with racism. I don’t really see that in other sports. There are incidents like the Michael Vick dog torturing episodes that divide along racial lines, but women’s basketball seems to be the only sport that race is consistently an issue.

She’s one of the biggest trash talkers in the sport. Had that label since her Iowa days.
Bird was the biggest trash talker around. It’s funny to listen to some of the old greats talk about things he said. But he was respected because it wasn’t personal and he backed it up.

The league seems to have a commissioner with a good business sense, she was the CEO of Deloitte,
Let’s talk about her good business sense..
Allowed CC to be left off the women’s Olympic team
Allowed the mouth breathers around the league to take ridiculous cheap shots at CC throughout the entire season. It got so bad at one point that their male counter parts began to openly warn them about fricking up the bag.
Caught flat footed when the LPGA added a pro am with CC to live coverage because she generated so much interest., the league failed to capitalize on it, never mentioning her appearance on any of its various social media platforms.
Honorable mention goes to Nike for signing her and failing to promote her anywhere, not even an ad campaign during her rookie season… a commissioner with good business sense doesn’t let the biggest focal point of fan interest let one of the biggest brands on the planet go MIA in their promotion of her.

As someone who grew up in that error...Bird and Magic were the leaders and most identifiable...but what made the rivalry great was the teams also...
Magic - Kareem, Worthy, Rambis, Green, Cooper, etc
Bird - McHale, Parrish, DJ, etc
Everyone knew everyone on that roster...
Plus you had Dr J and Moses out East threatening in the early 80s...
Moses on the early 80s Rockets were formidable..
Nuggets were always a tough matchup out West..
