While we don't yet know exactly what the full Big Ten Conference schedule will look like, we do know the basics – and there's one interesting wrinkle. The Big Ten will follow what Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez called an "8+1" schedule, featuring eight regular-games followed by a ninth cross-divisional game for every team to be played the same weekend as the Big Ten Championship game. The cross-divisional matchups will be decided based on each team's divisional standing at the end of the season.

As usual, the top team in the east will play the top team in the west for the championship, but this year all the other teams will be matched up, as well, with the second-place teams facing off, the third-place teams facing off, and so on.

Here's how the matchups would have played out if the conference followed this format last season.
Ohio State vs. Wisconsin - Big 10 CG
Penn State vs. Minnesota
Michigan vs. Iowa
Indiana vs. Illinois
Michigan State vs. Purdue
Maryland vs. Nebraska
Rutgers vs. Northwestern

So Iowa might play Maryland twice but not play Michigan or Michigan State? Big Ten is a joke.

I can't wait to watch the game that will determine the worst team in the Big Ten.

If they did this last year, Iowa would have played Michigan. I love the idea and I wish this would happen between conferences like in basketball.

I wonder how home/away is going to be determined on that 9th game

I actually don’t hate this little +1 twist...would certainly add more football (and some competitive games) on championship game weekend if all conferences did this every year

This is actually a good idea

I did just read that there will be zero fans at any big 10 football game this year. Bummer. Just when I thought they had gotten over the smell of their own farts.

I'm sure they will accommodate families. I guess I should have said there will be no tickets released to the public.

I think they clarified that family will be allowed in the stadium. Still dumb. Can the conference as a whole even enforce this? Seems like it would have to be a call made by individual schools.

I'm sure they had to come to an agreement as a group in order to get everybody on board.

This was in a different article, but it looks like they will try to avoid repeat matchups in that +1 game:

There may be adjustments to those games, however, as Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said the Big Ten will try to avoid repeat matchups if teams had already played in the regular season.

SEC needs to do the same thing
Have the SEC title game with West vs East champ

Than have West 2 play East 2
so forth
in home stadiums and these games could be played on a Fri before SEC title game
That gives everyone an extra game

I can deal with having no fans if it means having football played.
