Just for fun, a total for all 4 decades: 64 teams, 26 single appearances.
That’s not correct. The 64 team tourney began in 1999.
Before that there were only 48 teams involved.
From 82-87 there were only 36 teams.
There were smaller tournaments before 82.
In fact in 1947 the first ever tournament had just 8 teams.
The growth of the tournament is another indication of increased emphasis across the country.

Southern Cal - 5
This one jumped out to me because I thought it would be more. But after looking into it, I think this should be 4, not 5.

had a coach existed who could overcome the changing challenges.
So does Skip Bertman.

I think the door is open now with the transfer portal being added to the mix for recruiting. Roster management is going to be huge. LSU has completely whiffed on roster management recently. I believe development has been an issue here, but I also think that we have had guys on the roster that shouldn't be and didn't sniff some guys that we should have.
Baseball use to have liberal transfer rules. I remember when Skip needed a SS he got Andy Sheets to come on over from Tulane to fill that hole. He didn’t have to sit out.
And yes our recruiting, and evaluation has been bad. We wind up with too many holes.

quote:You're confused. All 4 decades resulted in an 8-team field at the CWS. 8 teams over 40 years is 320 teams total. I know that's not possible, but if gives you an idea of how many could end up there with no limits. 64 different teams went. 38 went more than once. 26 only went one time.

Yes, I was.
My point though is the field has increased with interest.

Louisville has never made the CWS finals.

This was your quote.
Just like Skip, as great as he was and as dominant as LSU was in the 90’s, couldn’t match what Dedeaux did in the late 60’s into the 70’s.
quote:What I’m saying is that what you refer to as dominant or consistent isn’t going to look the same or net the same results as it did 30 years ago. Being consistent and dominant may now mean 3 finals appearances and two titles in 6 years.
I'm saying that while the challenges are different, they are not insurmountable to the point that a dominant team could not exist. In fact, I believe that with no single team showing consistency, the field was ripe for a dominant team to exist had a coach existed who could overcome the changing challenges.

Its almost hard to fathom that FSU made 17 CWS appearances over 4 decades and never won a title and only made one championship appearance. Maybe the best coach in all of college sports to never win a title. They have certainly been a model of consistency for 4 decades.

quote:Martin does have an insane career. Coached for 40 years, the entire 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s and never missed the postseason once and technically finished every single season in the top 25. His son took over last year Mike Martin Jr and is leading them to their 43rd straight postseason. Never winning one title... talk about consistency

Mike Martin Jr. is a really good coach and I think he will keep on winning there consistently. Maybe one day he’ll be able to get over the hump his dad never could.

When they coached at LSU together, it was Smoke that put the teams together. Smoke found the players.
