Baseball Card Questions

I haven't collected cards in probably about 10 years and I wasn't a hardcore collector. I would go to Wal-Mart or Target with my mom and grab a pack or two. My question is, can you pull rare cards from those packs? Also what website do yall use to check the values of some of the cards you have?

The stuff at those stores is retail. Hobby is where it's at. More guaranteed good pulls

I honestly just have ripped products bought online.

I typically use Beckett, but of course sometimes a card is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Sometimes more and much more often a lot less.

You can pull decent stuff from Walmart packs. They usually don't have the harder to find stuff though. They have to save some stuff for the hobby shops. Also Ebay will tell you what any card is worth.

EBAY, see what the cards are selling for, tells you exactly what the market is for that card. Beckett prices are usually a good bit more than what you can sell them for.

Cards are perfect to buy now. Then when they become a fad sell sell sell or wait 10-20 more years

If they're the brand name packs, depending on the year you can probably do better selling the unopened packs.

I was downright shocked to see some of the values. They go for more than I imagined.
A lot of people do "breaks" with a collection of other people to afford cases of cards and have a random chance at more and better cards due to volume.

You can pull a rare card here and there, but hobby yields easier pulls. Completed eBay listings is the best way to determine value. Not many go by Beckett value anymore.

Rare cards are almost non-existent in the Walmart (retail) packs. Do yourself a favor and stop in a card shop, preferably a sports card shop and buy them there. You will probably pay an extra $0.50 per pack but you'll get better cards.
And if you do go to a sports card shop, plan to stick around and talk to the owner. Your interest will most likely increase.

Retail packs typically have the same hits just harder odds of getting them.
I use eBay completed auction listings as a value reference

Ebay is a good source, but the best source for how much cards are going for is to go to a baseball card show and see what dealers are offering and what is selling. Ebay in my opinion tends to have an inflated price when compared to shows. Ebay is truly a global market and you are looking at prices willing to be paid by folks in the sticks and boondocks who don't have access to shows and shops.
Or you have some folks who are obsessive about a certain card or player who have to have them and multiples of them which Ebay allows.
Beckett for its faults is a good database.

I still have my old cards from back in the day. I thought they weren't worth shite nowadays?

If they are either a) really old cards (80s and before) or b) have some really rare cards of good players, they're worth something. I sold a Kobe insert (no auto/grade/patch/numbering) for $300.00 on FeeBay. A numbered Iverson with a rough edge which I was honest about to 100 for $150.
Everyone thought to collect the rookies and the autos, but the really rare 1 in 300+ inserts from back in the day carry a lot of value, probably because they weren't assumed to have the value of stuff like rookie cards. Even the cheaper rookie cards at the time are worth more than the upper escelon. I kept a Kobe Topps Finest rookie in a nice case from my childhood and it went from clear #1 to like #7-8.
There's also these big consignment companies that buy out the rarer cards to keep value up. It's a funny little world.
Btw, for those curious about a TD.com break for fun that I said I'd put on (I must be insane to invite the MSB into my home )
There's the 2016 Bowman's Best case, a piece of the supplies, I have more including gloves and a bunch more loaders but there's the essentials.
Gotta get this streaming thing 100% but we coming...

I still have my Bryant rookies I pulled back then. Thought I might be able to move them when he went for 60 points in his last game.

You have better luck with hobby boxes. It's possible but not very likely to pull an insert from a retail box.
And use eBay prices. Search for previously sold cards on there for a better idea.

Hobby is the way to go. I bought a few boxes off of Dave and Adams...they throw some good deals on certain boxes around the holidays.
