As someone that’s been an athletic trainer and lives in a state with a huge opioid crisis (and a substance abuse minor in undergrad), half the problem has been the doctors handing out meds like they’re candy

I had my knee scoped last year. I was shocked when the orthopedic surgeon prescribed 60 Vicodins. I needed only 10-15 during my recovery. It was a simple procedure, I only saw the doctor once after my surgery, but he handed me enough opioids to last a month.

I wonder how many other people in a similar position would have taken every Vicodin because that’s what the doctor prescribed? How many of those would have developed a dependence or addiction?

I’m not one that will stand here and say addiction is a disease like cancer, because it isn’t. It’s a choice that I made and that I continue to make.

Because you can’t go without it to function because of the changes in your brain. That’s that fun stuff we call withdrawal (it’s not just physical).

Definitely seek treatment. Be honest with your doctor and seek out help with them. The physical withdrawal of an opioid can kill you, so definitely don’t try to do it by yourself.

Or give these folks a call. They can help with your next steps.

Maybe they didn’t mention it as it was unrelated to the OD? Idk.

They posted the tox report and it states cocaine under what they tested for.

‘Addiction’ is a horrible thing, but IMO the individuals have to take a part of the blame along with the companies who make these drugs.

I am a recovering addict and I completely agree. I out all of the blame in my situation on myself though. Purdue Pharma wasn't crushing roxys and shoving them in my nose.

Normally you'd take addies or coke if you're partying.

I'll ask again because it seems it went unnoticed: if this was a case of fentanyl laced coke, wouldn't the coke show up on the tox screen?

According to Breitbart Texas law enforcement sources, powered fentanyl can be easily mass-produced into the black-market oxycodone M-30’s known as “Mexican Oxy.” The deadly pills are often blamed for contributing to the opioid overdose crisis in the U.S. and the Sinaloa cartel has stepped up production of the product for the U.S. drug market.

According to the examiners, that amount of fentanyl isn’t lethal. Obviously we know he choked on his vomit and that’s how he died. But my question is how does one even do that small of an amount of fentanyl? All I’ve read is how the smallest of tiny doses can kill you.

Sad stuff either way.

I'm not smart enough to know how that translates in relation to his tox report.

So basically could have thought he was doing coke and in reality instead of it being coke that was cut, it was straight up baking soda and laxative cut with fentanyl. Or something like that.

I think everyone knew this was probably the case. Very sad and no less devastating and tragic. It's good the public hears this because it just reaffirms the horrible effects of those drugs and why we need to work harder to get certain drugs off the streets.

RIP Tyler Skaggs

That is completely out of character for someone who worked so hard to become a Major League baseball player and had a very promising future in the game he loved so much.

Except it's not out of character for anyone. These drugs are incredibly powerful.

Don't have a relative on hospice care though. Within 30 minutes of that relative passing away cops are knocking on the door to take possession of the pain killers.

Congrats on skipping where I said my minor in undergrad was substance abuse counseling.

I’ve also had close family affected by addiction.

But the trainer part was specifically to address that it’s not uncommon to see athletes handed tons of pain killers, especially in a full contact sport or one that has the tendency to produce chronic injuries over a long season. By team doctors. So his suggestion of just touching base with his doctor to solve his addiction problems wasn’t quite that simple.

Fentanyl is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back on this whole drug war. Especially if it is in high end drugs used by the rich

Rich & famous( far more famous than this Skaggs guy) have been overdosing on drugs for decades. Trying to put my finger on what's different from this drug epidemic compared to those of the past.

These people are seen more as victims as opposed to criminals of previous drug epidemics.
