I assumed you were hinting that LM could turn a profit while spending more. I agree with this, but the extra money has to come from somewhere. My guess would be that the Braves might push their payroll close to $200M but won't go past that. If AA is allowed to operate with a $200M payroll, the rest of the division is fricked indefinitely.

Ozuna in LF tonight. God help us all.

Ozuna in the lineup at all has been less than ideal lately. He’ll watch a grooved fastball to chase a slider away in the dirt. He’s hitting 44 points below his career average right now

Of course Ronald would get hit in the foot in his first at bat back from a foot injury.

Dansby's bat is quietly starting to go a little cold.

That's why it's imperative to sign Max to an extension now. Buy out his remaining arbitration years and pay him his money. It would be a dereliction of duty by AA to let Max walk.

Like I told you a couple of weeks ago, ace pitchers are like Franchise QB's. They don't grow on trees. If you have one, you keep him. Period.

Same here. Good to see him still doing well. I always liked Minor.

I want the Braves to keep Fried. I'm not telling y'all what I want to see happen. I'm just taking a guess at what I think will happen.

Now, if Soroka isn't the same pitcher and we're still having conversations about Ian struggling at this time next year, I think AA would end up giving him a huge deal. But if those two guys get back to where they were and Wright and Strider continue to pitch at least at the level they have been so far this season I think AA might think he has enough cheap, controllable starting pitching to allocate the roughly $30M AAV that Fried will get in free agency to other parts of the roster.

I agree. I would break the bank for a top flight ace and for an elite QB. The difference between you and me is that I have significantly higher standards as to what I consider an elite QB, and Kirk Cousins does not come remotely close .

It's Bobby Bonilla Day, again; Mets still paying retired star

How is Bobby Bonilla Day connected to Bernie Madoff?
Why would the Mets agree to something so absurd? Two words: Bernie Madoff. At the time of the deal, the team and ownership were invested with the Ponzi schemer and expected huge returns on their money.

Well, we all know what happened.

(BTW, Madoff died in federal prison last year. And the team ownership at the time — the Wilpon family — is gone. Yet Bobby Bonilla is still in the picture and is still getting his cash. Bonilla 1, Wilpons, 0, Madoff -whatever score it means to have died behind bars.)

quote:

So the team offered to pay Bonilla an installment every year starting on July 1, 2011, and ending on July 1, 2035. With a negotiated 8% interest rate, the annual check comes to about $1.19 million.

----> That means Bobby will rake in nearly $30 million instead of the original nearly $6 mil. That's a pretty fantastic return even when you consider inflation.<----

perfect for that franchise

You have an ace, you keep him. That's the end of the discussion. Regardless of how Soroka and Ian progress. He's the anchor of the staff. If Soroka gets back to form having a Fried-Wright-Soroka top-3 would just be sick.

If Max was on the other side of 30 I would be inclined to agree w/you, but he is 28 and in the heart of his prime. Pay that man his $$$.

Me and you are in agreement here, actually.

The article is on point and well deserved. Seriously though, good thing he’s hitting or this would be a disaster

He didn't hit the beginning of last year with the contract distraction, hopefully he doesn't hit the rest of this year

Braves forgot about pitching during the rebuild, they should probably keep the one that worked out

The entire rebuild was centered around acquiring as much young pitching as possible because of the low hit rate for pitching prospects.

And how many of those hit? We're in what year 5 now of competing and the starting pitching has been the weak link. They got lucky some unproven guys pitched over their head last year. 5 years into competing, longer than that since the rebuild started and Charlie Morton was fighting to be the ace.

That's kind of the point. Most of them don't hit, which is why they traded for and drafted so many pitching prospects. The most certainly didn't neglect pitching during the rebuild. I mean, hell, just go look at most of the trades they made during the early rebuild years and you'll notice that most of them were trading established veterans for young pitching prospects.

Newcomb came in the Simmons trade.
Folty came in the Gattis trade.
Fried came in the Justin Upton trade.
Shelby Miller (who was later traded for Dansby and Ender in a comically lopsided deal) came in the Heyward trade.
Ynoa came in the Jaime Garcia trade.

Here are the first round picks since 2015, which was the first draft after the rebuild started, pitchers in bold:

2015- Kolby Allard (traded to Texas for Chris Martin), Austin Riley
2016- Ian Anderson, Joey Wentz (traded to Detroit for Shane Greene)
2017- Kyle Wright
2018- Carter Stewart (did not sign, now pitching in Japan or South Korea)
2019- Braden Shewmake, Shea Langeliers
2020- Jared Shuster (name to watch maybe for next year's rotation)
2021-Ryan Cusick (traded to Oakland in Matt Olson deal)

They went heavy, heavy, heavy on pitching, especially when Coppy was still running the show in the early rebuild years.
