There are really no reports of him being a bad teammate. The only person in MLB that has talked bad about him was Gerrit Cole looking back on their UCLA days, but they've both sense admitted that they made each other better despite hating each other.
I gave my thought on Bauer back in the early day's of this thread, when it was first brought up that we should bring him in.
quote:
Look, I get that everyone is team Bauer because he's a face of the anti MeToo movement, but what you said above is not who Bauer is, not even close.
He's not some clubhouse hardass who says shite to galvanize the locker room. He's a socially awkward recluse who fancies himself an intellectual among meatheads in the sport. If you're looking to bring him in to be a clubhouse leader, that's a colossal mistake and could really frick shite up. However, if you think the clubhouse is already strong and cohesive enough to deal with his shite, then you definitely use a flyer on Bauer to see if you get the best out of him because, at his best, he's one of the best pitchers in the game.
Ok. This makes me rethink my position.
And the Braves do have a strong clubhouse w/Ozzie, Ozuna, Riley and Snit so that shouldn't be an issue.
quote:
Expanding on those thoughts, it seems like signing him would be the type of move AA is looking for. A bargain-bin-y short term type deal that is easy to make disappear if it doesn't work out. Low risk/high-upside. If we need to add an ace but AA is too scared to dish out big time money, Bauer is the move.
If the clubhouse leaders (Ozzie, Ozuna, Riley, etc) are okay w/it I would explore it. But the FO better do their due diligence on Bauer before they bring him in and I don't see why they wouldn't.

No they didn't.

This is true.

You have no idea if that is true. Dealing in absolutes about an inexact science is a fool's errand.

We have Ozuna on the roster, Bauer is fair game.
The fact that we have Ozuna and stuck with him goes to show you that all we care about (and should care about) is on-the-field production. It's what made Snit's comments on Bauer so dumb and tone deaf.

The MLB playoffs are the biggest crapshoot in sports. It's all about who gets hot at the right time, not who the best team over the course of the season has been, see Texas this year and the Braves in '21.
The College Football Playoff in on line one, and pretty emphatically asks that you hold their beer….

History has shown that pitchers who have a 2nd TJ are.pretty much done. You of all people were on here in the summer lamenting about Fried when he had forearm tightness about possibly having to have a 2nd TJ b/c that's pretty much a death knell.

Fair enough.
I should have specified pro sports.

I don't recall that but if you say so.
By the way, you now officially can't bitch and moan about me ever bringing up previous posts from you.

Agreed. Either you want to win or you want to be liked. We need another SP to push Morton down to 4 which is absolutely accurate. Bauer is just sitting there. Sure, they’ll be some initial stories run by the media but once spring training starts it will all die down. And you know that dude has a lot of crow he wants to serve. The folks in Cincy loved him.

I suggested going after Bauer earlier in the thread, and stand by it. I think that’s the type of high upside reasonable cost play the team could make.
Not sure what can be done in terms of any conduct related stipulations, but I’d include them if possible, or at the least make it highly incentive laden based on appearances and innings.

Fair enough, and I try not to do so, but I had to here to make my point.

I'd be okay w/this.

MLBPA would shut that down so fast, especially considering all they'd have to point to is that Ozuna still got fully paid his salary despite actually committing a crime. No way in hell we'd be able to come to Bauer, who will have multiple teams looking at him, with a contract clause that says the contract can be voided if he's not on his best behavior. His agent would laugh us out of the room.
Again, this idea that Bauer is some constantly angry malcontent is such an inaccurate perpetuation of things. He's a cocky, socially-awkward baseball scientist that had consensual rough sex with someone who's lawyer saw dollar signs. Like I said, the idea to bring him in as a team leader is dumb, because he's not that, but this idea that he is radioactive for any clubhouse is just as dumb.
There is zero data that shows he wrecks clubhouses everywhere he goes and there's no way we could put an "anti-clubhouse wrecker" clause in his contract.

We are all hypocrites in some capacity.

The obvious difference is that Ozuna was under contract, and Bauer is not currently.
I’d also say that I am not sure I agree with your statement “ Bauer, who will have multiple teams looking at him” — at this point, have there been any reports of any teams looking at him? Isn’t the whole point of the speculation in signing him that the Braves could get him on a cheap contract because the demand was low and Bauer wants a chance to prove himself/reestablish his value?
Now, I also offered the alternative that Braves could use incentives based on GS or IP and achieve the same thing by lowering the guarantee in case they cut ties with Bauer for off the field issues…but then he could lose money if he merely gets hurt.
FWIW, I am in agreement with you RE all the clubhouse cancer stuff being overblown.

He will have other teams looking at him, but no one is going to give him a longterm deal considering he hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2021.

Braves bought Ray Kerr from the Padres. Had to take on Matt Carpenter but will trade him according to Bowman.
Kerr is a power lefty with options.

Really is throwing me off how we are so willing to take on salary for smaller parts this offseason. Maybe it works, but it just seems to be making things more convoluted than they need to be.

With all this added money to obtain players I have serious doubts we add a real 2-3 starter this offseason
