The Mariners are trading Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales and Evan White to the Braves for RHP Jackson Kowar and RHP Cole Phillips.

This seems like the Braves taking on bad salary from Seattle for Kelenic, which kudos to them, because Kelenic is now a solid option in left.

Yea taking on about 20 mill in the deal. Hopefully Marco can provide some stability in the back end of the rotation. White. Yikes on that contract. But it all comes down to AA believing in Jarred.

I love this trade from AA. We took on salary but got our LF that has a ton of potential. Kelenic has a lot of power and is still only 24 years old. He’s had issues with strikeouts but damn the only thing we gave up is Cole Phillips and basically took on salary. This is a damn steal from AA.

Mariners fans on r/baseball are absolutely pissed about the trade so I figured it must be good for the Braves

Taking on that salary tells me we won’t be signing a starter.
Read something today where us, Dodgers and Orioles are in on a Cease trade and both those teams have much more on their farm to offer.

Kelenic is about as high upside a play as it gets in LF and Gonzales is a decent back end addition. White is obviously a horrendous player on a horrendous contract.
Very solid move on its own but still hope we can add a front line starter somehow.

Didn't Gonzalez have surgery to fix a nerve issue late last season?
Posted on 12/3/23 at 11:12 pm to Broski
Yes in August. Was supposed to be ready for his offseason throwing program though.
If this doesn’t stop us from adding a front line starter it’s an A+ trade. If we go with Fried/Strider/Morton/Elder/Gonzales because we paid $20M for White and Gonzales it’s a B- type deal imo.

It really all depends on if the protection in our lineup can make Kelenic be a more consistent hitter.
Every year he's been in the league, he's had one stretch that lasts about a month or so where he looks like one of the better power hitters in the game, only to then completely fall off a cliff. If he improves, this is an amazing trade.
If he continues a similar output like in years past, then we basically took on $20-plus million for a younger and slightly better Rosario.

I think in practice it’s a very smart gamble. Very little pressure on him. Tons of talent. We’ve seen glimpses. It might not work but it’s the type of guy you want to go after with what you have elsewhere in the lineup imo.
How the $$ impacts the rest of the offseason will be interesting.

I don't think thats really indicative of anything, Mariners fans just seem to have really strong feelings about him. And generally salary dumps aren't really "feel good" trades for the fanbase dumping the salary.

I feel like one of Kelenic or Grissom is eventually heading to Chicago for Cease. Who would you rather hold onto?

Cease is a Boras client. For that reason alone, I don't believe any of the trade rumors linking him to the Braves.

Fallout from last night’s Braves-Mariners trade: The Braves do not plan on keeping left-hander Marco Gonzales, sources tell @TheAthletic. Expected to be part of another deal. Destination unknown.

I think Grissom's floor is a bit higher, but give me Kelenic for the ceiling

Terrible trade. Taking on that much money AND Kelenik absolutely sucks
Not sure what they are doing
