If anything needs to be changed at all, it's rookie salaries. Jamarcus Russell got his money and turned into a turd. He didn't do anything to earn it on the pro level... all he did was have the proper genes to be gigantic and play pretty well in college.
Other than that, I have no problem at all with how much money Professional Athletes make. Pay them more for all I care. They give me one more reason
to look forward to Sunday.
High value is put on entertainment in this country. The NFL makes a shite load of money. Players are the biggest asset to the NFL. Therefore they get paid for making the NFL what it is.

Is it generally accepted that TV revenue has made the difference b/t salaries of yesterday and today?
Yes. TV broadcasting = entertaining millions of people each week instead of tens of thousands.

I think that we all can agree that it is G.W. Bush's fault.

just so everyone is clear here, no one throws a fit when Reese Witherspoon gets paid 20 mil to make some crap movie. Mainly because it's not as publicized, but it's the same situation.
You're willing to go watch the dross she puts out, so she makes a ton of money. Same goes for athletes.
I don't get what the OP is getting at with the 'larger question'. People like entertainment, and the only way salaries change is when people don't want to go anymore.

I have no problem with you getting paid. If not, all the money would stay with douche bag owners and league execs.

people constantly fail to realize this.
They never seem to realize in these discussions that the money is there regardless. So either you want a billionaire to get more rich, or you want the athletes you pay to watch earn money.
It's really not that hard to grasp, yet tons of people fail to. On the flip side of that, I can definitely understand the thinking that we make too much money, but it's if it's there, what can you do?

Right, it's just simple supply and demand. We as fans pay good money for tickets, apparel, etc. and I'd rather the money go to someone who entertains me than some old man in a press box who's already a billionaire. Many athletes come from absolutely no money and get out of bad situations because of the money in sports, it's great for them. If I was athletic enough to be a professional athlete, I'd want to be compensated for what I do for my employer.
