SC was the best team that year and most everyone outside of Louisiana agrees.

The computers calculated based on objective factors and decided LSU was better than USC. The two teams had Arizona as a common opponent and I remember an article where an Arizona player (maybe offensive lineman?) was asked which team was better and he said hands down LSU.

The LSU fanbase revisionism on this is unreal. Nobody counted that LSU title back in the day. We all knew SC was the best team.
This statement is the revisionism. The “experts” who rely on subjective eye tests were the ones who were upset because the BCS revealed what a flawed system the old system was and the experts might not know as much as they’d like to believe.

It’s just silly to say no one counted LSU’s 2003 title as legitimate. I don’t have a problem with the AP naming USC as champs but, in the context of the system all schools agreed to, the AP title is definitely less impressive than the BCS title LSU earned.

Besides, Reggie Bush was on the 2003 roster and the BCS stripped the Trojans of their 2004 BCS title and would have done the same if the Trojans earned the 2003 BCS title but they had not. The 2003 USC team was assembled by breaking NCAA rules so how can you even say it’s fair to compare pristine LSU to foreign object hidden in a loaded boot USC?

.the AP doesn’t crown a National Champ

They've been doing it since 1936. Until 1950 the AP champion was the only "consensus" national champion. Before that it was just have a good season, hopefully get to play the rose bowl, and claim yourself champions.

1950 brought a two poll system with the coaches poll.

The AP had the intelligence to realize bowls as exhibitions instead of factoring in to determine the national champion was stupid long before the coaches.

The BCS finally overtook the poll system but it had it's flaws.

2003 split was because the BCS was stupid enough to put an Oklahoma team that got curb stomped 35-7 into the title game. People still valued the history of the AP enough to recognize it as a split.

With the backlash around this decision if FSU were to somehow beat Georgia convincingly and Alabama wins a championship there's a chance the media and public would accept a split championship.

The problem with this argument is the AP had Texas ranked ahead of FSU and only has FSU 29 points ahead of Alabama. There are 65 AP voters. Clearly many of them agree with the committee decision.

It's highly unlikely there would be a split.

If it plays out that way it will likely be accepted by the majority of the media and public.

It will also be the last "split championship" with the 12 team playoff and guaranteed participation for all.

You need some revision? It was Oklahoma that shouldn’t be in the game. USC played Michigan who was number 4. No one really counts usc title. Cal? 8-6. Washington state finished second at 10-3. Next Oregon at 8-5.
Lsu played more ranked opponents and finished with number 5 Georgia leading into who will play in the bcs.
LSU and usc had 2 common opponents
LSU Auburn 31-7
LSU Arizona 59-13
USC auburn 23-0
USC Arizona 45-0
USC played 2 ranked opponents
LSU played 4

FSU would have been the weak link in the 4 WITH Travis. They had 2 weeks to show what kind of competitor they would have been for the CFP with out him, and they put a garishly bad offensive performance 2 weeks in a row.

If they would have won 55-45 they would have been in as well, which is also wild

Winning by 10 over the #15 team has never in the history of football been considered a bad performance until now. In fact, it is always used as a plus for a team

If FSU was ranked #1 in the AP Poll going into bowl season like 2003 USC (actually ranked #1 in both Polls).

Since the AP has never dropped their #1 team after winning their bowl game but FSU is not ranked #1.
