Analytics conference says Raiders trading Mack to Bears was best transaction of 2018 originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com When the Oakland Raiders traded Khalil Mack to the Bears, the whole world seemed to crown Ryan Pace as the winner of the deal.

Six month later, an MIT analytics group is taking Jon Gruden's side in the team. The 2019 Sloan Sports analytics Conference wrapped up earlier this month, and they handed out their annual awards, including Best Transaction in all of sports.

One of the sixth-annual Alpha Awards went to the Oakland Raiders for trading Mack in exchange for two first-round picks, one second-round pick and one third-round pick.

To me Khalil Mack is an amazing player, but is he the difference in winning a championship? No. I would rather have those 1st round picks to spread talent across both sides with more cap flexibility.

It was all about changing the culture. That’s why he brought in team guys like Antonio Brown this offseason

The only problem with that is you have to hit on those picks.

Oakland couldn’t generate any pressure or get any sacks last year. They were historically bad.

Arden Key, one of their high picks, didn’t perform well at all. Granted, he has room to improve.

You can't really judge that trade until you see who was taken with those picks and how their careers progress. To call it a win now is disingenuous for any analytics.

I think it was a great trade. Mack is a generational type talent but with him their defense still sucked. And you have to give him QB type money. Signing him Long term makes it really hard to sign any other good players to get the defense better.

I am going with the Colts sliding down 3 spots in round 1 while picking up 3 2nd round picks

then drafting year 1st year All Pro OG Nelson + 1st year All Pro Darius Leonard + Starting OT Smith, + 2 rookie DE's with 6 total sacks combined.

they still also receive another 2nd this year pick 34(from Jets)

I don't understand how someone can use analytics to rank a transaction that's only halfway completed. If they draft 4 kickers do they still win?

and the Kings trading rent a Cousins for Buddy and a 1 has to be the best deal in the NBA in a long time.

Good and I'd go further and say you have to see how the teams do in 2022 2023 when the picks are supposed to be starters.

Do the bears win a championship with mack? Great deal.
Do the raiders go on a run in 2022 and 2023 and get to afc champ game vs the mahomes twice? Great deal.

It could be great for both.
I liked it for oak/lv raiders. 4 cheap good guys.

Those are some good picks to try to hit on. I'd say having 4 decent key contributors is more important than just Mack.

Who they pick is largely irrelevant though. You didn't trade for the players, you traded for the picks.

It's like trading a nice car for an amount of money that is 3-4 times what you paid for it. That doesn't become a shitty deal for you if you light all the money on fire. You got a great deal still but decided to do something dumb with the profits.

If you hit with those picks yes, but if you get less production out of those pics than you would have gotten from Mack, can you actually call the trade a win?

You can make a good trade and get bad results, there is risk in anything.

Yes. You got 2 first rounds, a second round, and a third round for one player. You won. The actual players picked are irrelevant.

Y'all do know the best transaction could have been the Bears actually getting him... There is value in competing for championships in the here and now and not always setting yourself up for the future, and Mack helped them do that
