I can grasp things just fine. But I don't see where it's hard to grasp that he is beloved at A&M, where he wasn't under near as much pressure and he isn't at UK, where it's pretty widely know the shite he did.

not fan base perception, I think the total difference in players at A&M who still seem to love him is a bit odd.

It is an interesting and odd dynamic. He was able to get away with a lot at A&M by winning and being a little under the radar. At Kentucky, he wasn't able to win enough to get away with how he treated players and media. It appears as though he wasn't all that different of a person and his perceptions are totally different at the two places. Weird how that worked out.

Ehh, you can see it in the quote from Kentucky player in the story.

Josh Harrellson - "He was just an old school, hard coach. He wanted to tear players down and rebuild them into what he thought a good basketball player was. But the only problem was the guys you normally get at Kentucky didn't need that kind of treatment. We knew how to play basketball. Yes, we needed to develop as players, but he didn't need to rebuild us from the ground up."

A&M players were willing to buy in.

Kentucky players weren't.

One could make the argument that at Kentucky he ran into the buzzsaw of dudes who had been told how great they were their whole lives and didn't care to get worked hard Bear Bryant style while at A&M he mostly had guys that weren't that highly touted and knew they had to work their asses off to succeed.

Another thing that helped him at A&M is we were at the tail end of the Fran era in football, and Fran was a shady character himself (though not to the level of Billy Clyde) who didn't really win. I think most were just happy we were having success in basketball since football was in the middle of a rough era, that was certainly the feeling among myself and my friends who went to school during that time

This was touched on briefly in the story, but the part that amazes me with Billy Clyde is that he was Bill Self's lead assistant for years.

You'd think he would learn something about the importance of communication. Self is one of the most charismatic, likable people I've met in sports and he coaches the team I loathe.

Someone needs to reexamine those Kentucky rosters

Plus it mentions it in the article if you actually read it that Billy's staff at A&M was a big part of how he was able to get away with it there.

Well he may be considered a good hire after all since you figure they will vacant wins and championships because of Calipari.

I can't wait till the day when we have to say the Calipari era did not exist.

Not going to happen. Trust me, Forde, Thamel, and even in Lexington has reporters that would pounce on something if it would bring the program down…the fricking Lexington Herald Leader won a Pulitzer for the investigation reporting during the Sutton era.

UK has former NCAA compliance folks working with the athletic program. They are dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

Cutler chased him down the hall. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. When John Calipari was hired, in middle of his news conference, he pointed at Alan and said, "Did you really chase that guy down the hallway?"

quote:

The following Monday, Rich Brooks, who was Kentucky's football coach at the time, had his weekly press conference and began reading over injury reports. He listed all the injuries and then at the end said that Alan Cutler is out this week with a hamstring, which was hilarious.

to Rich Brooks

It was well known that Rich Brooks and Billy did not like each other.

Billy was a fricking mess. The stories from the bars at Malones, Chinoe Pub, and Merrick Inn are legendary. Yes, the story of him and Legions GF were true.

Did you intentionally leave out Harrelson's quote saying he's glad he had Billy but would NEVER play for him again?

i went up to Lexington for the LSU game back in 2009 when we clinched the SEC title at Rupp and UK fans legit stated they'd trade BCG for Trent Johnson

Nope.

Its not needed to show that the Wildcat players weren't buying into it when they were there.

Harrelson pretty much states that the team didn't buy in with the quote I did post.
