Those are not the AC72's.

I think this is finals of the qualifying maybe. Yes, America competes in qualifying even though they have a lock in the finals

Edit. Online is saying finals. Those boats are disappointingly smaller than last time.

Is there an America's cup for dummies. I'm watching...and have literally no clue what is going on.

Edit #2.

This is not the actual americas cup. This is qualifying finals. These are the two teams that will be in the actual americas cup though. The media is playing this wrong, but technically it is the finals. It's just not the actual americas cup yet. The boats in the real one are twice as big

They aren't racing the 72s anymore. It'll be the America's Cup Class for the foreseeable future, which are multihull 50ft catamarans. The 72s were actually quite dangerous, and it was too expensive. Oracle spent $100mm on the last cup, whereas now the budgets should be around $45-50mm

This is the America's Cup. Winner gets the Auld Mug.

Emirates Team New Zealand takes 2 races today to go up 1-0 (they started down 1) over Oracle Team USA.

The Kiwis boat looked fast, as it has since the round robin qualifiers.

Oracle made some uncharacteristic mistakes today to boot. Spithill will need to some work to get back in this thing.

Not particularly. The best way to get up to speed is just to read, A LOT. Go to Americascup.com and there some sections on there that'll get you up to speed.

Yea, I was mistaken. My Bad.

The comeback from the last americas cup was amazing. If it is half as exciting as that then I'll be happy.

Last year was amazing. I don't remember all the details, but Oracle stared like -5 right? Then lost the first 7 or so races? Then won like 14 in a row to win it.

Oracle's boat struggled in the light wind today. Hopefully they figure it out if we have some more light wind days ahead. I'd expect though that the Americans boat will be much more competitive if we see some heavy winds.

That New Zealand boat has been fast though, Spithill has his work cut out for him.

It was 4 years ago

Oracle started down 0-(2). They were then down 8-1 and won 8 straight races to retain the cup. Those AC72s were some powerful boats. Incredible machines.

September 2013

I know, it seems crazy, but it has been that long.

Seems a lot longer than 2013

And it's weird, i would of wagered Conner was the skipper. But when i think of Americas Cup, i picture Conner as the skipper.

His hey day was being shown on ESPN and the likes when i was in my teen years.

Hell, the American boats now, barely even have 2 Americans on the boat.

That 13 boat only had 2 Americans, 1 after they changed tacticians mid regatta.

There is now a rule that 25% of the crew on boat must be of the country of boat origin.

Doesn't look good for Oracle Team USA. The Kiwis boat is way faster and it doesn't look like Oracle Team USA has an answer for it.
