WolframAlpha Parabola Nerd alert: Aaron Rodgers' Hail Mary throw actually traveled almost 100 yards - Video from sideline at line of scrimmage
quote:
we can clearly see Rodgers releasing the ball from his own 36-yard line, and it lands roughly 3 yards into the end zone — which would've been further had his tight end not snatched it out of the air — so by any conservative estimate the ball was caught 67 yards from where he threw it. Except, once we account for the height of the throw, that distance increases significantly.
The dome at Ford Field is 128 feet — or 42.67 yards — high. Conservatively speaking, the ball launched 26 yards in the air. Subtracting Rodgers' height (6-foot-2, or a little over 2 yards), the ball traveled a total of 85.6 yards along that arc. That math checks out, according to our resident Ramanujan Eric Edholm.
I actually think the ball went higher than 26 yards, so let's just say he threw a ball 100 yards, confirming what we all knew already — Aaron Rodgers is armed with a cannon.

Damn, beginning to think the Lions are cursed. I thought this kind of shite only happened to the Saints.

didn't see the ending last night but after watching that video I think the facemask call was bullshite.
I saw it live. It looked like a good call the way Rodgers head moved and how he came up off the ground with helmet askew.

So have a man assigned to each eligible WR. Play off of them obviously so you can easily be behind them if they go 50 yards downfield, but you can follow any WR that cuts his route short.
correct.
You also put in guys like Calvin Johnson and Ebron, you know , guys that catch footballs for a living.

Yeah, they have been blown out 3 times, but they have had some really close losses this season.

You can tell by the non reaction of the defender. He knew he made contact with the face mask, and just kinda walked away in disgust.
No celebration of the sack, or blowing up at the ref

"The Curse of Bobby Layne"
In 1958, the Lions traded Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Layne responded to the trade by supposedly saying that the Lions would "not win for 50 years". This story has been disputed as being a hoax, particularly because the quote was never published at the time.
Still, for the next 50 years after the trade, the Lions accumulated the worst winning percentage of any team in the NFL. They are still one of only two franchises that have been in the NFL since 1970 that have not played in a Super Bowl (the other team is the Cleveland Browns). The Lions, for those 50 years, were 1-10 in eleven postseason appearances; their lone playoff win came against Dallas following the 1991 regular season. In the last year of the supposed curse, 2008, Detroit went 0-16 and thus became the first team to lose every game of a 16-game season.
Coincidentally, in the 2009 NFL Draft, right after the curse supposedly expired, the Detroit Lions drafted University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford first overall. Stafford was an alumnus of Layne's former school Highland Park High School and also lived in a house on the same street as Layne's. In the 2011 season, Stafford's first full injury-free season, he led the Lions to their first playoff berth since 1999 but lost to fellow Texan Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.

Where does that rocket he fired last night rank amongst the all-time NFL game-winning Hail Marys? Just that play, not preceding one.

What is outer boundary for how far a football can be thrown?

Bonus points for including air resistance.
Also humidity, and curvature of the earth's surface.

Anybody with an actual answer? Is there a Guiness World Record on this?

Can we stop this now, this is not how we measure distance in football! By this metric I can throw a football 60+ yards, but that doesn't mean I can throw it from my 40 to endzone which is what matters.
