The BCS was absolutely a better formula. When they expanded to 4 teams they should have just used the exact same BCS system but taken the top 4 instead of top 2.
Yet the media has poisoned people into thinking the BCS was just "computers" and wanted experts and stuff.

I don’t know. 5 conference champs, 3 at large. if you’re #9, frick off
I like this and have heard it multiple times and I can eventually see it.
I would revise it to be: 5 power conference champs, 1 highest ranked Go5 champ, 2 at large
It completely eliminates conferences worried about being left out, every Power 5 conference champion gets in, and it guarantees a little guy gets a shot every year. And you still have 2 at large spots for eilte teams who have hard scheduels and get upset in a key game or two.
In such a system nobody has any legitimate complaints anymore. Everyone has a very clear path and if you don't make it, it's 100% your own fault.

As a numbers guy, this is correct. I've said this since 2004.
But if we did this, it would be fair to everyone, and the MSM couldn't determine who is left out with the "eye test", so here we are.
CFB will always be a beauty pageant with predetermined finalists.

Doesn’t the CFP normally pick the 4 that the BCS would have anyway?

They honestly need to break off. They would get way more exposure.
Actually they would get less.

I cant believe people thought a subjective committee would be more fair than an objective formula-based system

It needs to be 16 teams or 24 to follow bylaws set by NCAA in every championship
The committee is good but only should release a ranking once a year, at end of regular season. They took a semi good thing and screwed it up with Disney having so much clout as well.

Nobody knows. Giant part of the BCS formula is the coaches poll, which starts to mirror the committee’s rankings once they come out.

24 would amount to a lot of games for these college players, and I honestly wouldn’t want to shorten the regular season. As a fan of a G5 school, I like seeing those programs being able to schedule at least one P5, and maybe an OOC G5 in a nearby region (think Cajuns vs Tech, or Southern Miss, or Houston, etc).
Even 12 teams allowed into a playoff could work and be much better than now.
P5 conference champs
Top 3 ranked G5 champs
4 At Large (based on ranking) regardless of conference
Seed accordingly to final ranking, and give byes to Top 2 teams. You’d have some interesting games, especially with the Top 2 taken out for the first weekend, there’d be a possibility of one of the G5s upsetting a favored P5.

Think about this:
1. Bama (Presumed SEC Champ) vs 8. USC/Oregon (Pac 12 Champ)
2. Clemson/ND Winner vs. 7. Cincinnati (G5 Highest Ranked)
3. Ohio St (Presumed B1G Champ) vs. 6. Texas A&M (At-Large 2nd)
4. Clemson/ND Loser (At Large 1st) vs. 5. Oklahoma/Iowa St Winner

So at this point in the season with 8 teams and simulated BCS rankings, we'd be looking at:
#1 Alabama vs. #12 USC
#2 Notre Dame vs. #9 Iowa State
#3 Ohio State vs. #6 Cincinnati
#4 Clemson vs. #5 Texas A&M
I could get behind that. A&M is probably the only team that shouldn't be there, and I imagine Clemson would correct that immediately.

Well everyone bitched about the BCS system because it didn't pass their "gut feeling" test. I thought using computers was as close to objective as possible but the rejection of algorithms in favor of gut judgments gets us to where we are now.

We're only a handful of seasons away from the BCS and people already forgot that it wasn't objective, either?

I'm pretty sure both Cincinnati and TCU would have been in a 2009 playoff using the BCS formula.

I'm ok with 8 with the P5 Conference Champs getting an automatic bid as long as all conferences eliminate divisional play and take the best 2 teams like the ACC is doing this year. I don't like the idea of 6-6 divisional champ having a shot at an elite tournament. Unlike the NFL, College football needs to best of the best.

If the “elite” team lost in the CCG then they aren’t either “elite” or the “best”
Tell me what best team is?
A champion isn’t always the best team by the way
