The Big 10 (Unofficial CSAL Championship) Tournament Bracket has been set, and this weekend should be a great weekend of basketball kicking off March Madness. Sure, we will get to the College tourney soon, but the Middle Schoolers will be center stage this weekend.
Bracket looks like this: (Preseason Rankings are in Parenthesis)
#1 OLOM (1) versus winner of #8 MBS (unr) and #9 Sacred Heart (7)
I don't believe Mercy has lost a regular season game and has won every tournament they have played in, besides the Holy Family tournament in which Aloysius defeated them. This is a confident team who has earned their #1 seed. The winner of MBS and Sacred Heart will have a tough matchup.
#4 St. George (2) versus #5 CHS (4)
The committee struck gold by getting a first round matchup between Mentor (Long time St. George Head Coach) and Student (Former St. George player and current CHS Head coach). St. George is going for a 4peat and has knocked out CHS in 2 of the past 3 seasons. This is the first matchup between these 2 teams all season.
#3 St. Jude (3) versus #6 St. Theresa (9)
St. Theresa has been the surprise team of the season and have even knocked off St. George and CHS at some point. They will not be out-hustled. St. Jude's high low game really gives other teams fits. They have a sharpshooter from beyond the arc who has come on strong in the second half of the year.
#2 St. Aloysius (5) versus winner of #7 St. Thomas More (6) and #10 Holy Family (8)
Aloysius may be the most improved team from the start of the season and is arguably the hottest team heading into the tournament. It is hard to find a weakness for them, and they can defeat you in multiple ways. STM and Holy Family have already played a few close games this season, and this shouldn't be any different.

Does anyone have the results of the tournament this weekend? I had to get another screen name after my computer crashed and for some reason didn't save any information. My other screen name was Petrol0204.

When did it change from the Elite 8?

I think they went to 10 in order to include more teams. The top 2 seeds now get byes and play the winners of the first round games between the 7-10 and 8-9 seeds.

For a season that had a ton of parity, the tournament went pretty much completely chalk.
The final four ended up being #1 OLOM versus #4 SGS and #2 Aloysius versus #3 St. Jude. None of the first round games were too competitive. St. Jude overcame a halftime deficit to defeat St. Theresa, and St. George survived a third quarter comeback and pulled away from CHS.
Mercy controlled the entire game and defeated SGS by about 10 in the semi finals. Aloysius defeated St. Jude in an ugly game 29-24.
Championship Sunday went as follows:
In the Consolation Championship, #5 CHS frustrated #6 St. Theresa with a man defense which switched every screen (both on ball and away from the ball.) This strategy propelled them to a 15 point lead in the fourth quarter. CHS flashed their speed and talent throughout the game, and ended up with a 41-31 victory and the Consolation Championship Trophy.
The third place game between #3 St. Jude and #4 St. George was a very physical matchup. It looked like a football game at times down low. St. Jude ended up winning 26-23 thanks to their dominant high low game down low and some outside sharp shooting.
The Championship game pitted #1 Our Lady of Mercy versus #2 St. Aloysius. Aloysius got up 9-4 early. Both teams gameplans were pretty evident - Mercy wanted to make this an up tempo full court game and played full court man to man defense to try and speed things up. Aloysius tried to slow down the Blue Jays speed and stay back in a 2-3 zone.
The Lions entered the half with a slight lead and the momentum. Mercy came out the second half with an inspired enthusiasm. Both teams really fought hard for every loose ball. A couple Mercy players got going, especially #21, and they went on a major run in the third quarter creating a 27-17 lead a the end of the third.
The Blue Jays slowed down the pace in the fourth quarter and forced Aloysius to play man defense. Mercy spread them out and took advantage of driving lanes at that point. I believe the final score was 38-22.
Congrats to the Our Lady of Mercy Blue Jays on their Championship. This will go down as another great CSAL season. Looking forward to next year.

thanks for the information. I wasn't able to attend games for a few weeks but a parent from OLOM said they scored over 40 and over 60 in their last 2 regular season games. I thought they might be tough to beat. Several of those kids will have good high school basketball careers should they choose to keep playing. They were very athletic and fast and their coach did just enough to put them in a position to be successful without limiting their normal basketball instincts. The few games I saw, he allowed them to play up tempo and press; the constant pressure eventually wearing down the opponent. But being a former high school coach with 2 state titles and 2 kids in the NBA I would think gave him an advantage. Also I thought they were in unusually good physical condition for a typical CSAL team. To me they never looked tired. Anyway thanks for the update.

Geaux Broke- No, but you are in the same ballpark so I figure it's time to know the background. I played after the Big Baby era. He told my teams who were not as talented that it was a waste of his time to coach us. "Goats" is what he would call us (for some reason- not to be confused with G.O.A.T. of course). All he did was play mind games making being a member of the basketball team horrible. Many of my friends-the better athletes/basketball players decided to go play soccer instead. So, I come here periodically and return the favor by playing my own version of mind games, making him look as self absorbed as possible. He knows this happens and stopped posting 4 or 5 years ago, but I am sure reads TD occasionally. After one player went to the NOLA.com boys basketball board and blasted him; he told us to stay away from these posting websites.
Sounds crazy, but you have no idea what he did to us mentally. Parents tried to get him fired 2 times but failed. It was abusive and this is harmless fun hoping he reads this....Karma...
