16 seems like a random number to use

17 includes Ohio State. Can't include that.

And SEC dominance didn't return in the 90s.

13 of the past 14 championship games have featured at least 1 SEC team

There have been more years (2) with two SEC teams than zero.

You need to recheck your math - I only see Bama 5 times and I’ve been told by other conferences that SEC is just Bama and teams riding their coattails

This has always been a hilarious argument the SEC haters try to make. It's true Bama has done the lion's share of the SEC's dominance at the national level the past 10 years, but trying to call the SEC a 1 team league is patently absurd.

The SEC is the only conference that ISN'T a 1 team league. You've had 5 programs in the SEC win national championships in recent history (6 if you want to count Tennessee's in 98). You've had 3 programs win multiple national championships and 4 programs play for multiple.

You wanna see real 1 team leagues? Check out the ACC (Clemson) or the Big12 (Oklahoma). The Big10 seems to have some depth at times but even still nobody but Ohio State can actually seriously contend for the natty.

Then you have the PAC12, now a 0 team league.

The SEC's clear dominance over college football began in the early to mid 2000's. Saban's arrival at LSU and Meyer's arrival at Florida sorta were the turning point for the SEC beginning to leave the rest of college football behind.

Three different programs won national championships - Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee. No other conference in college football can claim that for that particular decade.

The ACC had two different programs win (FSU and Georgia Tech)
The Big 8/12 had two (Colorado and Nebraska)
The Big Ten had one (Michigan)
The Big East had one (Miami)
The Pac-10 had one (Washington)

Yeah the truth is that it seems like what happened is that the rest of college football fell off.

The 90's there was a lot more national parity and variety. As your list shows, you had programs from all over the country and different conferences legitimately competing at the top tier.

Most of top tier SEC programs stayed top tier and the rest sorta fell off.

You've had a ton of notable blue blood programs hit the skids and the only new blood to replace them were Oregon for a period of time and now Clemson.

The way USC was playing at the end of that year, wouldn't surprise me if USC won. I feel the same about UGA at the end of the 07 year. And even LSU at the end of 06. A lot of teams finish playing top notch football but stumble out the gate.

7 of the 10 National Titles in the 80's were won by Independents. Suck on that Conference pumpers...hey we won, because I belong to a Conference that a team I got humiliated by won the Natty.

And the SEC won 1 title in the entire 80's. Georgia.

College Football was fun in the 80's...sort of sucks now, with super Conferences and fandom about Conferences and not teams.

What have you won? the sport with this bullshite lie - "oh I won too...because Bama won...Mississippi State champs too! We didt it! SEC! SEC! SEC!

God give me the 80's back when no one cared about Conferences and it was just your fricking team.

Moo State didn't win a National Title because LSU did. Do people not understand this?

Shitty teams in every Conference don't win National Titles.

The only thing LSU did in winning the Natty is pump LSU...you can't fricking proxy win.

Hey I knew a guy who knew a guy who won the lottery...ergo I won the lottery.

7 of the 10 National Title winners were won by Independents.

God give me that decade back, it was more fun and just CFB as fun instead of this Conference wars and regional crap.

Crazy to think how close it is to being 11/16 with Bama and Auburn each choking away an extra championship.

Had the playoff been around for 04 I wouldn’t be surprised if Auburn won it all.
