1. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang, North Korea
2.Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan
3.Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania
4.Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio
5.Kyle Field, College Station, Texas
6.Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee
7.Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
1. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang, North Korea
quote:
In perhaps the strangest turn of events, the largest stadium in the world resides in North Korea—not exactly a hotbed for athletics. Opened in 1989—on May 1, as you may have guessed—the stadium was designed to mimic a magnolia blossom with its 16 arches across the roof. While Rungrado, also known as May Day Stadium, hosts soccer, it also puts on events like the Arirang Festival, which included 100,000 participants, and celebrations of North Korean leaders.
2.Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan
3.Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania
4.Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio
5.Kyle Field, College Station, Texas
quote:
While still an impressive 82,000-seat venue for much of its life, a major redevelopment for the 2014 season at Texas A&M University boosted Kyle Field's capacity to one of the largest in the world at 102,733. Originally opened in 1904 after horticulture professor E.J. Kyle purchased a covered grandstand and cordoned off an agricultural field, the structure took on new life as a stadium in 1927. Expansions have continued every since at the Home of the 12th Man.
6.Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee
quote:
What started in 1921 as Shields-Watkins Field has grown for decades to now encompass both Shields -Watkins Field and the venue that surrounds it, becoming the 102,000-plus-seat Neyland Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee. With nearly 20 expansion projects in its lifetime, Neyland has evolved from the early days of just 3,200 seats in a west grandstand in 1921 all the way up to over 104,000 seats before dipping slightly to its current capacity.
7.Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
quote:
The 528 windows on the exterior of Tiger Stadium on the campus of Louisiana State University serve a real purpose as a Tiger Stadium was a dormitory for about 1,500 students for decades. Opened as a 12,000-seat stadium in 1924 with stands on both the east and west side, expansion ensued in 1936 that turned Tiger Stadium into a horseshoe and added seating above the addition of dorm rooms. The state budget allowed money for dorm rooms, so LSU took advantage of the funds in a double-whammy and even used the rooms as part of student housing until the late 1980s. Tiger Stadium turned into a bowl in 1953 and eventually reached over 102,000 seats and into the upper echelon of the world's largest stadiums.

Why doesn't it include NASCAR stadiums which are even bigger than college football stadiums?
Posted on 1/10/17 at 3:10 pm to knight_ryder
They couldn't find a picture of Tiger Stadium within the last 10 years?

I thought Seattle was the home of the 12th man?
Posted on 1/10/17 at 3:12 pm to PrimeTime Money
i don't know seems weird to not include them.
Also weird that a&m isn't the most cultish on a list. The north Koreans and the Pedos beat them out.

Neyland Stadium may be big, but that picture makes it look like one rough looking stadium

shape of stadium. acoustics. loud fans.
Chicago Stadium where the Bulls and Blackhawks played in the 1970's was the loudest I ever experienced. not the biggest. the people were into cheering loud.

I don't think NASCAR race tracks count as stadiums. It's just a track with seats around it.

What is BDS on the list. Isn't it bigger than Tiger Stadium?

So they're post a pic of Tiger Stadium with 90,000 but not the actual 102,000

Nobody really cares about LSU on a global stage

That picture has to be at least 10 years old.

Indy seats 257k
Texas Motor Speedway seats 183k
Bristol seats 160k
As stated above though, I think they are more considered venues as opposed to more traditional stadiums.

I figured there would be more European soccer stadiums on the list.

Azteca Stadium isn't on the list and I know it should be.
Posted on 1/10/17 at 3:54 pm to GeorgeTheGreek
George, Azteca is now down to about 77,000 seats, and still under renovation for the 50th anniversary. I just looked it up. It opened in 1970 with more than 120,000. Maracana in Rio is at about the same after 2010-2013 renovations.
