The public support may not be that universal. The biography of Rose that came out earlier this year relates some actual polling data that was taken as far as Rose.
For the record, I don’t discuss my personal feelings on politics or religion online, ever, and what I am about to say should not be taken as political. I’m simply stating what the author wrote about the polling data.
That data showed that only one demographic supports Rose and his Hall of Fame candidacy: White conservative men. He had no support from any other demographic.

Pete has some Moe Norman in him.

If Pete Rose ever threw a game, he did a damn good job of hiding it. He violated the letter of the law, but not the spirit. The gambling ban was put in place to prevent another Black Sox scandal, but that's not what Pete Rose did.

that's the only demographic that should matter so he's good.

I disagree. Maybe there was a night he didn't have money on the Reds, so he saved a bullpen arm for the next night knowing he would bet. We really don't know. Gambling on events you're involved in is the cardinal sin of sports. In today's world of easy access to gambling, it's more important than ever to show the consequences.

This should be placed on a billboard for everyone who opines, “Since the leagues are involved in gambling, they ought to put Pete Rose and Joe Jackson in Cooperstown.”
They don’t understand that it’s irrelevant if MLB puts slot machines and baccarat tables at every stadium gate, players and managers and coaches and team officials can’t be allowed to bet on the sport. And there’s not one thing unfair about it.

Nothing unfair about it. Insanely hypocritical.

I’m as white and conservative as they come, and Pete Rose should never step foot in the Hall.
