The truth is not dumb, Nolan Ryan is not one of the 10 best pitchers or maybe even top 20 of all time. Saying there are only 15-20 pitchers ever is by no means an insult, though sadly people will take it that way.

You have to give Ryan a lot of credit for having such a long and successful career. However, he is the most overrated pitcher by a landslide (for some people). A lot have realized he is an all time great, but nowhere near the level of Walter Johnson, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.

Nolan Ryan ranks 269th all-time in adjusted ERA at 112. Now, I don't think there are 268 pitchers better than him, but it does show that Ryan wasn't very good at run prevention, which is sort of the biggest job of the pitcher. And people talk about his K's, but his walks record is literally untouchable:

BTW, the gap between Ryan and Carlton in all-time walks is 962, which would rank 127th all-time. Yes, the gap between Ryan and #2 on the walks list is near the top 100 all-time in total walks.
I'm not a big fan of WHIP, but just to give you an idea of how many baserunners he allowed, Ryan ranks 273rd all-time in WHIP.
Ryan wouldn't sniff my top 10 pitchers of all-time. He's be lucky to crack my top 25.

If we're talking overall best pitcher over a career, Nolan is top 10 easily. If we're talking 1 game/1 season at their best then he's further down the list. Then you've gotta have guys like Doc Gooden ahead of Nolan.

Adjusted ERA (ERA+) takes in account an era and park adjustment much like OPS+. It is then place on a scale in which 100 is perfectly average and each point represents a percentage point. So 112 means that Ryan is 12% better than an average pitcher throughout history in ERA. It's a good rough tool to compare across eras, because the value of runs tend to fluctuate (think the the difference between the Steroid Era and the Dead Ball Era).

I wouldn't put him top 10, but probably in the 20-25 range. I put a good bit of value on a player being above average over a period of time. Kinda like Jeter. He isn't the best by any means, and yes I'm a Yankee homer, but he's been absurdly consistent for such a long period of time.

No, he's not close Baloo laid out some valuable stats. I don't have time to compile a formal list but off the top of my head: Walter Johnson, Greg Maddux, Christy Mathewson, Kofax, Pedro, Clemens, Gibson probably

That's about where I am. Longevity matters, and he was able to have a nice post-peak career (cue the "mere compiler" argument which I loathe). But whenever he was on a good team, he wasn't the best pitcher. Tom Seaver was better on the Mets, and Mike Scott, though likely cheating his arse off, was better on the Astros.
