DW was a bad man in his prime.

Richard Petty was the GOAT. Jeff Gordon was the greatest of the era. Earnhardt got a big death dump in popularity. One of the best and most well known drivers. Not THE best and most well known. And widely despised.
——
DE was a better driver than Petty.
I never liked Dale. Thought he was dirty but also damn good. That combo made him great
As he became the old man on the track. That’s when the love came. Surely not early on as I was at Talledega in 89’. He got a lot of boos, by far the most. I still have my ticket stub

a-hole who was a dirty driver.
Dale was the 70's Steelers and everybody else was the 70's Cowboys when they played the 70's Steelers.
Oh, and Sterling Marlin WAS a dirty driver.
EDIT: Come to think of it he wrecked somebody to win a race not long after.

I was sitting at the bar at the bulldog on magazine when that happened.

I found out after attending a Birmingham Bolts game. In the parking lot, people were standing around, asking complete strangers if they had heard the news. It was surreal.

You wont even get an argument from Petty. He has said this before himself.

I was taking a sabbatical from college delivering pizza and heard the news on the radio. Just surreal.

David Pearson was the real GOAT.
Bingo
Pearson and Junior Johnson are 1A and 1B with Earnhardt 3rd.

DW
DW, Bobby Allison, and Cale Yarborough all were ridiculously successful by today standards.

If I had to choose one driver, out of all the drivers in history, to run a race for me, on any kind of track, where my life and the lives of my family were literally riding on the outcome, that driver would be David Gene Pearson.
Pearson was also smooth off the track too. I always heard from old-time racing journalists that nobody, and I mean nobody, in the history of NASCAR got more nookie than the Silver Fox in his prime.

Anybody notice though how good he got in the booth after the first year. When he was the only color guy there he had no problem carrying it by himself.

I will say that some of the decline NASCAR has had is self inflicted.
Some of it? Lol

You ever hear the term “bumpin is racin”. Dale was nicknamed the The Intimidator because of his racing style. While sure you can hate him for it, he was one of kind, and the ultimate competitor. Get the frick out the way if he was rear view, or you’re gonna be a victim of the GOAT.

He wrecked a lot of guys he didn't have to. What he did to LaBonte at Bristol was pure chickenshit.

I respect Earnhardt and all, but NASCAR isn’t exactly a sport with a great big talent pool to compete against. Nothing like the major sports that are offered at nearly every high school and coaches scour the Earth to find the best prospects.
I don’t know how you would even develop someone as a NASCAR driver without a lot of money and connections. It’s not something you just sign up for on a sheet of paper like the high school basketball team.

Nascar died for me when Davey Allison passed.
Neil and Dale cinched it for me.
