Sad news, Alex Zanardi died "unexpectedly" yesterday. For those unaware, in 2020 Zanardi was in a handcycle race on public streets and collided with a truck, and almost died from the face/head injury, and spent a year and a half in the hospital. I don't think he was ever seen again.
Zanardi was a two-time CART champion. His aggressive style of driving was perfect for IndyCar. He was definitely my favorite driver in his brilliant three-year run 1996-1998, winning the championship in 1997 and 1998. I was at the 1996 Laguna Seca race where he pulled off The Pass on Bryan Herta. I wasn't at the Corkscrew, but I saw it on a big screen from the main grandstand.
RIP to a great champion who also won 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals in the Paralympics.

Indy to F1: "Whatever you can do, we can do better."
Granted, the F1 race was great this weekend and it will be tough to beat, but I love the Indy car setup

What a pass!
Edit: I'm watching it on delay.

It was clear Lundgaard had better pace than Malukas, so it felt inevitable. But that outside pass was pretty awesome.

Good race, great pass. Watched delayed. And no yellow with Rossi stooped and cars zooming by?

It's a good question. I googled around, and some guy on Facebook said that in 2022 when they only had 33 entrants, they still did last row qualifying on Sunday (so the last three guys had to qualify again for the last three spots). However, I could not find any accounting for the Sunday qualifying that mentions last row qualifying. I don't think it happened.
Oh, I found the qualifying format description. I edited it to show the relevant info:
quote:
Positions 1-30 qualify with positions 13-30 (or 13-33*) set. Will not re-qualify on Sunday.
<...>
For an entry list of more than 33, once cars are outside of the Top 30, they are considered to not have a qualification speed as only positions 1-30 will be locked in during Day One.
* When only 33 cars are are entered in the race
So the last row will be set on Saturday. I guess that means on Sunday the Fast 6 guys will have an extra hour of practice to fill in the time since the Fast 6 qualifying is on a TV schedule.
