I remember back in the heyday of IMSA Camel GTP racing, someone made the comment that NASCAR had $25,000 cars racing for $250,000 purses, while IMSA had $250,000 cars racing for $25,000 purses.

I have a book that was given to me as a kid that had the world's fastest cars in it. There was a section on the NASCAR Chevy Lumina, at the time the avg cost was $185K for a top car and maybe $80k to $100k for the mid tier and lower teams. Most of the money was just in the drive train. If you removed the drive train, the chassis and sheetmetal was around $40k to 55k

And this was back in the days when teams had special qualifying components such as engines, radiators, brakes, etc that they would swap out for race components after they got locked in.

And in the 1980s, a Porsche 962 was a quarter million or more, right out of the box.

NASCAR probably saw the writing on the wall and came up with terms that would be satisfactory. The public opinion on them was extremely low and the risk of having everything being brought to light on how they have been running things was enough to make them make accommodations.

When you have big time sponsors like Bass Pro shops writing letters to them, letting them know how displeased they are, it was only a matter of time. They couldn't afford to lose the money if big time partners started to pull out.

Kind of looks that way. When a major sponsor who has been in the sport for over 2 decades starts attacking the leadership, the chances of NASCAR coming out of the trial with what they wanted were slim. No doubts that Johnny Morris's letter tilted things in favor of the teams.

I wonder how long it will be until the "Steve's" are relieved of their responsibilities? You can't have two of the big leaders of the sanctioning body showing negative bias towards certain team owners. It starts to bring into question the integrity of how NASCAR runs things.

Glad this didn't drag out any longer. It sure felt like it was trending toward NASCAR settling eventually, but the Johnny Morris letter was a nice "knock this shite off" moment.

From some reporting quoting “sources,” the charters will be evergreen, teams will now share in international revenue for the first time, the three-strike rule (allowing teams to veto non-safety rule changes) will be reinstated as a five-strike rule, teams will get 1/3 of revenue from intellectual property, charter revenue will have to be periodically negotiated amidst new media rights deals.

That’s it. The Frances remain in control of NASCAR, they keep International Speedway Corporation, they keep their tracks.

The original charter agreement gave teams the right … and it wasn’t heavily advertised … to block three proposed rule changes by NASCAR that didn’t involve safety and could increase their costs. That was taken out of the revised charter agreement, but is back under the settlement with two additional strikes.

NASCAR could propose a non safety related change and the teams could veto it by saying no. NASCAR could still override the veto and go ahead with their proposal, but this can only occur 3 times. Afterwards they could no longer override the teams on that issue.

That was a one season only thing that preceded the current charter system and the only time the teams tried to veto NASCAR was some changes they made to the Roval. They objected to some changes to the track that NASCAR wanted to make.

NASCAR removed the 3 strike rule when they updated the charter system to it's current setup as they didn't want to listen to the teams any longer. (Shocking right?)

The Roval is a steaming pile of crap. I don't blame the teams having problems there.

If they want to do a road race, go to a road course.

Virginia International Raceway is a pretty setup and it’s also near Danville, they could tie it in with Wendell Scott. And NASCAR owns flippin’ Road Atlanta.
