The tactic and terrain came together today to produce a classic. Del Toro played a dangerous game today thinking carapaz was going to save his giro. Maybe he didn’t have the legs, but if he did…it’s his responsibility to save the jersey. Heard Lance talk about several situations in his tours that he had to take the responsibility on himself to protect the lead and his jersey. Whether this was the call from the car or his on the fly, it was wrong. Once Wout was connected on the downhill…this was over. Don’t blame carapaz for stop working, but once Del toro slowed to allow several UAE riders back on while Wout was burying himself for Yates, game over.

Yep, Cadel Evans had to do it in his TdF win.

If you have the jersey you close the gap

I'm leaning more toward Del Toro not having the legs. He had plenty of chances to go after Yates on the Finestre gravel if he felt good but he didn't even test Carapaz, it was the other way around.

Once it was clear WVA was going to make it over Finestre it was over. He ripped the gap open

Yeah even if UAE and/or EF would have had riders up the road to wait for Del Toro and Carapaz they still would have probably lost a good amount of time to Wout.
