So is the assumption that he had a verbal with McLaren to take Danny Rics seat and Alpine assumed he was coming to them?
The talk around the campfire is Alonso pushed AM to make a decision prior to this past weekend, essentially pushing Vettel out.
Meanwhile, Piastri's contract said he had to have a contract for an F1 seat by July 31 or he was a free agent for the next year.
Alpine slow played Zo so he made his move while Piastri, not having a seat guaranteed, talked with McLaren.
Basically, Zo and Piastri boned the hell out of Alpine leaving them with no driver. And Alpine left themselves open for it due to their lethargy in doing anything.
And McLaren's moves seem to show Ric is not guaranteed his seat next year no matter what he claims his contract says.
The talk earlier in the year of Piastri going to Williams was Alpine placing him there (paying for the seat) to live up to their contract and keeping him under Alpine control. Since nothing was signed by Aug 1 he's apparently free to look elsewhere.

All jokes aside, I’m sure some of you remember
@JensonButton’s contract dispute with BAR Honda & Williams back in 2004 which went to the Contract Recognition Board who ultimately decided in BAR’s favour. Can anyone recall who the Vice President of Honda Racing was back then?

The answer is Otmar Szafnauer

I've been around long enough where I've seen this kind of thing actually play out and happen,” he said.
“When Jenson signed with Williams and ended up at British American Racing Honda, if you remember those days, there was absolutely no issue. I mean, I know Oscar is different from Jenson. Hopefully we don't have to go down that route, anyway.
But your presumption was, oh, a driver wants to go somewhere else. So hopefully that's not the case. But I have seen it where a driver actually signed with another team incorrectly, so had to drive for the team that he initially signed with.
“And it was absolutely no issue. Jenson at the time did a stellar job

It seems like Piastri had the Williams seat already if he stsyed with Alpine.
Maybe a Wiiliams contract guaranteed on his own terms is better.

Announcement from Williams at 9:00a central time
The employees of the Williams team are summoned to a meeting at the time of the announcement that they have planned. I have no idea what they are going to say, but when they sign a driver they don't do this. LINK

If the goal is to hop in Hamiltons seat when he retires, then williams makes sense.

Latifi buying Williams to keep his seat.

I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year.

Gotta be an awkward moment for Latifi
