Sprint race today, sprint race tomorrow, spring race forever!

DRS is too powerful in my opinion. Overtakes were so easy.

I like it on narrow tracks.

DRS and how a driver utilizes it, becomes a strategic part of the race. Too soon, and a driver can lose his advantage. Too late, and a driver can't overcome in time before the finish line. Personally, I like the intrigue and drama it creates.

Really it seems like the DRS is too powerful only on the RB's for whatever reason. KMag was able to hold off several for multiple laps while they came at him with DRS.
Meanwhile the RB can seemingly be 20 cars behind and still blow by.

Magnussen explained that while he had not completed a sprint race distance on the soft tyre, the degradation both he and Haas had seen in practice made them wary to use it.
“We did like 13 laps and it took a step around there of degradation, and I judged that it would continue,” he said.
“But looking at everyone else at lap 13, it was kind of the same. It took a little step but then stayed there and they had the same pace as me.
“So the soft tyre was the right tyre, I got that wrong, but we live to fight another day.” https://us.motorsport.com/f1/news/magnussen-rues-wrong-tyre-call-for-imola-f1-sprint-race/10152307/

I’m with Crofty. I could go for another 10 laps, making it 30.
So you mean you want a race.
Yes. Yes. That is what we all want.

Yup. Looks like the NHRA rather than F1.

Brawn shits on Russell's opinion and calls Merc a backmarker team.
Asked about Russell’s opinion to the contrary, Brawn said: “Whenever my driver’s had a bad car, he’s complained about the race! So I think George’s opinion or the opinion of anyone at the back of the grid is not the opinion that we really listen to.
“The opinions we listen to are the guys who are really competitive, they’re racing in the middle, racing at the front. https://the-race.com/formula-1/brawn-doubts-validity-of-russells-f1-sprint-race-criticism/
*Yeah, I used some hyperbole. Don't care.

The only drivers who moved any significant amount were qualified out of place.
There is no jeopardy for bad quali with a good car when it comes to sprint races. Just start the sprint grid based on pts standing.
George even said the same as others, "it needs to be longer." Which is just saying you want a second race.
Brawn is doubling down saying he wants 6 sprints next year.

“I think we were very fortunate with the tyre today,” said a delighted Ross Brawn after overseeing the first of the revised-format sprint events. “Racing drivers are racing drivers and any thoughts they would take it easy would always be wrong. The tyres were perfect for the sprint as they began to degrade. At that point in a normal race the driver would pit and it would all come down to strategy. But this way it was down to the drivers. Interestingly it’s probably given Ferrari a good insight into the race for tomorrow.”
I didn't notice this during the race. Interesting;

For a succinct demonstration of this variation in tyre performance, we need to look no further than the McLaren drivers. Lando Norris took fifth after initially running third but running out of tyre. Daniel Ricciardo ran sixth throughout but was much quicker at the end and suffered no tyre issues.
Data for the sprint not available yet on F1 tempo but I want to check that out. As I recall Ric was pulling away from Mags on his mediums at the end.

Lando was passed like he was standing still by two far superior cars. His tires falling off might have come into play with RIC, maybe. They were already 25 seconds out from 1st at that point. Hell, Sainz was 13 seconds off the podium.
Mclaren pulling away from Haas is probably the norm from this point in the season. Mclaren/Merc might have a duel, with Alpine maybe joining in.

Lando said his tires were gone and Ric was gaining on him.
Tire management made the softs last 21 laps.
The McLaren engineer speculates that the faster cars back in the pack were actually easier on their tires as they were not pushing the entire lap, but rather only where they could pass. Basically just cruising behind a dude then passing with DRS on the main straight. No need to push the rest of the lap.

Maybe Brawn learns from the sprint and shortens the DRS zone, but he probably thinks this type of racing is entertaining.
Lando probably came out of the Sprint exactly as he figured he would. His strategy to a T. Mclaren wasn't racing RBR or Ferrari.

I was just amazed Mag wasn't able to make any headway, was in fact losing, in the last few laps while on the mediums.
I think they are the same compound that was the medium at the last race and they weren't great there either.
If it's a dry race tomorrow tire choices may be interesting. I haven't noticed anyone even test the hard.
I'm hoping for wet.
