2020 Drew Brees or Chad Pennington in his prime

I would post this on Saints Talk, but they’re pretty sensitive about tDecline of Brees and I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. So I pose the question to the MSB: which noodle arm do you think would take the Saints (or your team if not the Saints) farther this year? I’ll hang up and listen.

Intertesting thought, id take brees only because ive watched alot of saints games and every once in awhile brees makes a throw down the field, but for some reason those routes are now scarce in the play designs. Maybe its because of brees, but these offensive designs have been the norm for the saints offense since about 2017. And his arm was fine then

Brees’ QB rating is 102.7 this year. Pennington had 1 season above 100 in 11 seasons.

While I do agree this thread is a troll attempt, and I would personally take 2020 Brees without a second thought...
Comparing QB rating (or almost any passing stat) from 2000-2010 vs. now isn't exactly apples to apples.
10 of the Top 12 single season passer ratings in NFL history have come between 2011-2020, and Nick Foles (2013) and Ryan Tannehill (2019) rank 3rd and 4th on that list respectively.

You know that’s not fair. Nine (almost 10) players last year had a passer rating of a 100+. In Pennington’s last good season (2008), only one player did (even Brees didn’t). There’s currently 13 right now. Offenses have changed dramatically, and even average QBs put up huge numbers now.
It’s not really a troll question either. Pennington did have 2 seasons in which he was arguably a top 5 QB. Brees is not a top 5 QB right now.

I used QBR because it’s a stat most of us are familiar with. You’re right, it’s skewed and not a perfect stat. But the point was that Brees is still pretty good, he’s currently 11th in DVOA.
It’s a troll because the question was even asked. Anyone ask this for Aaron Rodgers the last 2 seasons when his DVOA was 13th and 12th? Of course not.

100% Brees because he of his grasp of the offense. He's an OC on the field and a still a better field general for this offense than Pennington would've been.

No it’s not. Pennington in his best (read OP’s title) seasons, was a top 5 QB even according to those DVOA rankings. Brees is no longer a top 5 QB. People are underrating Pennington here.
