No they aren't. They lack that elite superstar who can take over games, but the team has great depth and good overall talent.
The front office has not let him down. The Rangers have been in the playoffs for like 7 or 8 years in a row with different rosters.

Wash is at -185 and ANA is -117 tonight.
I really cant believe the caps are favored by so much. this team was down 2-0 leaving Washington after game2.
obviously their strong play is commanding respect from the betting public but this is still the defending champion Penguins we are talking about, a team WASH has only managed to beat 1 time in the last 10 series.

HEY! That's 1 in 9, pal.
But come on. Most of those have no bearing on this one. Shockingly, the Mario-Jagr-Stevens teams were better than the Bondra-Konowalchuk-Hunter Caps. Crosby and Ovi have only played twice before in the playoffs, and once was back in 2009, when each team had radically different rosters. Last year's series certainly plays, though. These players have history, but not a ton of it. The Rangers have sent the Caps home packing a lot more, though not as recently.
The way history will play is not with the players, but the arena. An early Pens' goal could suck the air out of that place so fast. Caps need that home ice advantage, and that means an early goal for the home side is critical.

this is true, so we must turn to the current in-series trends for an explanation:
Carlson playing exceptionally well
Pen D playing like garbage.
MAF getting beat glove side often
Holtby looking spectacular
Ovi on the 3rd line has been a winning formula
Caps top Forward (Backs, Kuzy, Oshie, ovi) look like they can suddenly get any shot they want from anywhere
this all turned into a Combination of outscoring the Pens 8-0 (until the pens got 2 at the very end)

I disagree with quite a bit of your list....
Carlson has been good this series after playing like total arse against the Leafs, but Orlov-Niskanen are clearly the Caps' top 2 defensemen, and I don't think it's particularly close.
Agreed. the Pens D is garbage. In their defense, Letang and now Daley are out, and Doumolin is playing hurt.
Same with every butterfly goalie on earth. By covering the bttom of the net like they do, every butterfly goalie has a problem high glove side. It's simple biology.
Holtby has had a save percentage above .910 in just one game this series, and it wasn't the last two. He's no longer playing poorly, but let's stop short of spectacular while he's letting in over 10% of shots still.
Ovi on the 3rd has been great. Freed up Bura to run wild on the top line.

My points were targeted at just the past two games; not the whole series. The things that turned this from a 4-1 stomp to a game 7.
With that said, id be short sighted to leave off Orlov's improvements
I imagine the f/o and special teams numbers have improved toward the caps side as well but i dont have those stats handy
And yes , those #s would suggest holtby is just good not spectacular lately.

Holtby did make some great saves in the 3rd period of Game 5, but that's pretty much it. He's been a passenger these last two games, which is a step up from the liability he was in Games 1-4.
Towards the end of Game 6, the Caps power play just seemed to be screwing with the Pens. Moving the puck at will. It was gorgeous. But I think some of that was the Pens just wanting the game to end and not giving full effort.
Orlov has now moved into the role of the Cap who is Most Due for a goal. He's been everywhere, but still no goals this playoffs.
But look, this is one game for the series, and anything can happen in one game. And any team with Kessel, Malkin, and Crosby can go off at any time and score 5 goals or so. The Caps played well to earn this chance to move on, but it's just that: a chance. This game is pretty close to a coin flip.

I agree, I handicapped it as a coin flip (wash -110)last night and then saw Wash was -180 so i've been trying to determine why.

Seems like Vegas wants people to take Pittsburgh. So they don't view this as a coin flip. But there's not a Caps fan alive that would sign off on those odds. -180?!

I'll be there tonight. Arguably the biggest game in Caps history considering everything a win tonight would represent. I'm headed down to Chinatown in about an hour. Feel oddly optimistic tonight.

I think the Ducks win tonight. As far as the Pens-Caps game I have no feel for it. Just hope it is entertaining. It will be interesting to see the changes either makes after elimination.

No one in their right mind thought we had a chance against the Wings in that series. That was in the middle of the Wings dominance. And Esa Tikkanen quickly extinguished any hope they had by missing an empty net in Game 2.

I honestly expect the Caps to win it all if they can get past this round. It's all mental with this team. Also, the Pens even with their injuries would still be the favorite to win the cup if they were to beat the Caps tonight. It's a shame the two best teams in the league had to meet in the 2nd round.

Yeah, the Caps team that made the Cup Finals wasn't all that good. It's just that all the top seeds lost in the first round and the bracket opened up. Beating Buffalo in the ECF is a big moment, but a win here would arguably be bigger.
The old adage is its only a big game if you lose. Tonight, it's the opposite. If the Caps win, this is the biggest win in franchise history. Which says a lot about franchise history.
