This is the time to get shite done.
Lots of golf tomorrow.
Rinaldi just said 11 will most likely be unplayable.
This thing is gonna be stupid.

I really hope they don't have to use one of those precautionary holes on the West course.

Black eye for the USGA if that happens

I am really not sure how the selection process goes for an Open but how did this course get selected? (again, I know)..... especially with the logistical issues, going through houses, back yards, can't handle some gallery here and there. This was not built to allow a US Open of today, I get it. The USGA is better than this IMO

If it happens, it's the nail in the coffin for Merion.
Too bad, because otherwise this course is awesome.

I think that nail is already in the coffin. Nothing they can do about weather, but they can select courses that can handle it better.
ETA: And that also don't have some of the logistical issues that this course presents for both players and fans. I bet the people who live between those 2 courses aren't very happy with it either.

For its' historical significance.
I think it's an awesome course.

Yeah, and this will be the modicum for the future by which they will determine feasibility.
It'll be like, 'Oh, we don't want another Merion on our hands.'

I agree. The nail is already in the coffin. Costing them too much money in attendance, concessions, and merch alone.
Posted on 6/13/13 at 9:04 am to BRgetthenet
Exactly. They won't ever say it, but the USGA is worried about the outcome of all of this, and they are already embarassed

Merion's history, which is great, is the main reason. But, I think the USGA definitely had an ulterior motive in this decision. I may be completely off base in this, but I think the USGA selected Merion as some sort of referendum on the game today. If the players go out and shoot around par or a couple under, they can say that the game today is just fine as it is. If the winner breaks scoring records, they'll try to say the technology has grown too much, and they'll have their case to scale back the ball and the clubs. And the reason I say this is:

They stand to lose about $10 million from doing this. That just doesn't make sense when there are many, many other places you can go for the Open, some that are just as historical. So, IMO, something's up besides just wanting to go walk in the shadows of Hogan and Jones again for old times' sake.

This. I think they said they could have 25K spectators where other events can carry 300K.....
It has is historical value but its 2013. Thinks have changed. These events need $$$$

Old courses are like old stadiums. Works of art, lots of history, and at some point obsolete.
Posted on 6/13/13 at 9:24 am to Thib-a-doe Tiger
And the early returns suggest the pros are going to eviscerate this course. Poulter was -3 after 3. Not much to go on, but I think you may see many scoring records fall this week

Not that I know of, think they're still getting pounded
